Description
  • Apse mosaic of the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (1220) - Roma - Italy.
  • The apse mosaic was made by Venetian artists. Christ is flanked by the Apostles Peter, Paul, Andrew and Luke.
  • The small figure near Christ's feet is Pope Honorius III, who ordered the mosaic. Pope Honorius III (1148 – 1227), born Cencio Savelli, was Pope from 1216 to 1227.

NOTE: The intensity of colour has been lowered in the present image, in keeping with the normal appearance of old mosaics, and because the original appeared to have had its colour "enhanced" (ie. over-strengthened.) Lowering the intensity makes subtle variations of colour, tone and detail apparent.
