Description AWM Caption: SYDNEY, NSW. THE NSW 2ND CLASS TORPEDO BOAT AVERNUS STEAMING DOWN SYDNEY HARBOUR. THE AVERNUS AND HER SISTER SHIP ACHERON WERE BUILT IN SYDNEY AND WERE COMMISSIONED IN 1885. BOTH TORPEDO BOATS WERE SOLD IN 1902 WHEN THE NSW NAVAL FORCES WERE REORGANISED.
