English: This large stone cross sits in the center of the Praca Anchieta Plaza. It is dedicated to Sao Francisco de Xavier, the patron saint of Salvador. The Praca Anchieta is the cobblestone plaza in the Pelourhino that connects the Igreja de Sao Francisco with the main court, Terreiro de Jesus. The baroque church and stone cross were built in the early 18th century, using the economic resources of the newly-wealthy sugar barons and the sweat of their slaves.
