Description AWM caption : ROSYTH, SCOTLAND. C.1918. STARBOARD BROADSIDE VIEW OF THE CRUISER HMAS MELBOURNE (I) WHILE OPERATING WITH THE GRAND FLEET. THE SHIP HAS BEEN PAINTED IN A DAZZLE CAMOUFLAGE SCHEME. A SOPWITH CAMEL FIGHTER IS CARRIED ON A LAUNCHING PLATFORM FITTED OVER HER FORWARD 6 INCH GUN. OTHER WARTIME ALTERATIONS TO HER APPEARANCE INCLUDE THE REPLACEMENT OF HER POLE FOREMAST BY A TRIPOD TO WHICH A DIRECTOR TOWER HAS BEEN FITTED. THE HEIGHT OF THE MASTS HAS BEEN REDUCED. SEARCHLIGHT TOWERS HAVE BEEN FITTED AMIDSHIPS AND AFT. A 3INCH AA GUN IS SITUATED ON A PLATFORM BETWEEN AFTER FUNNEL AND THE MAINMAST.
