Description

Portrait of Mrs Constance Sladen, after the artist RA Henry Tanworth Wells, c.1900. Constance Sladen was the wife of (Walter) Percy Sladen the Victorian biologist and collector, whose collection is housed at RAMM. Constance was a talented artist who exhibited works in London galleries. She also became an authority figure for the archaeology of Yorkshire.

Constance Sladen is depicted in a seated, three quarter length portrait, directly facing the viewer; she wears a blue evening gown with a pink pattern and trim with white lace, also a string of pearls and white elbow length gloves. She is holding a closed fan. Her white hair is off her face - possibly tied at the back of her head. The chair is partially seen left and right and the background is a melee of mottled colours.
