Old_Madison_County_Courthouse_1836.jpg (600 × 437 pixels, file size: 41 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Description Madison County's second courthouse, built in 1835, replaced the original wood frame structure and served until 1913 when the building was dismantled and reconstructed. A four-faced clock was added to the copper dome in 1849. The Greek revival design was the product of Virginia-born architect, George Steele, who had lived in Huntsville since 1818 and also designed the First Alabama Bank Building. The courthouse displayed memorials for the Revolutionary and Confederate soldiers, and the lawn had a herd of pet deer that were relocated in 1914.
