Summary

Description
English: This image was made using the Protein Data Bank PDB code 2DN1, and shows one of the oxyhemoglobin heme complexes showing the side chains above the coordinated O2 ligand in order to assess if there is steric crowding around the O2 ligand that could prevent the poisonous linear CO carbon monoxide ligand from binding (a long held view that steric crowding is responsible for blocking CO is now considered incorrect, that the is enough room for the small CO to bind well, that it is instead the thermodynamics (delta G) where unfavourable loss of water upon O2 or CO binding is offset by the favourable O2 binding (higher delta G) but not by CO binding (not favourable enough delta G to offset)
