Summary

Description

Botanic Gardens, Sydney - in the Pyramid Glasshouse. The flowers are small, only about 2 cm diameter.

This was tagged just "Passiflora sp." and, being in the Pyramid, must be an Australian native. With these tiny flowers and unlobed leaves it obviously has no relationship with any of the 3 native species I am aware of, namely P. aurantia, P. cinnabarina, P. herbertiana. So I tried a Google search on "passiflora new species Queensland" (assuming it comes from NE Qld) and turned up the name Passiflora kuranda, the first Australian species in subgenus Tetrapathaea to be recognised and named. See abstract of 2009 journal article at www.bioone.org/doi/abs/10.1600/036364409788606343 This subgenus was formerly ranked as a genus, of a single species from New Zealand, Tetrapathaea tetrandra. I think it's a fair bet that this plant is Passiflora kuranda.

Now confirmed as P. kuranda by Krosnick, author of this species - see further comment by English_Passiflorist.
