Summary

Description
English: SA service dagger (German: SA-Dienstdolch) for members of the Sturmabteilung, the Nazi Party's original paramilitary wing.
  • The SA dagger was the service weapon of the Sturmabteilung (SA), formed in 1921 under Adolf Hitler and Ernst Röhm. The SA, also known as the Brownshirts, was a paramilitary group modeled after Mussolini’s Blackshirts. They wore brown uniforms due to their affordability, as surplus uniforms from Germany’s colonial forces were readily available.
Hitler commissioned Professor Paul Woenne, , head of the Solingen Technical School for the Cutlery Industry (Leiter der Solinger Fachschule für die Stahlwarenindustrie), to design the SA dagger in 1933, based on a 15th-century Swiss dagger (Schweizerdolch) pattern known as The Holbein Dagger.
The first SA daggers were produced by over 120 small producers and became available to higher ranks in January 1934. They featured nickel fittings, a Nazi eagle-and-swastika, and an SA insignia on the grip. The earliest grips were made from pear, walnut, or maple wood. The dagger blades were inscribed with Alles für Deutschland ('Everything for Germany') in gothic script (Fraktur)
The Schutzstaffel (SS), originally part of the SA, also used similar daggers with black grips (SS-Ehrendolch, SS honour dagger). By 1943, over three million SA daggers had been produced. The daggers were initially distributed through SA departments with specific markings, later becoming available for individual purchase with maker's marks indicating their origin.
