Summary

Description

c/n 001 Built in 2004 as the Scaled Composited Model 311. In 2005 Steve Fossett used the Global Flyer when he became the first person to carry out a non-stop solo flight around the world. He departed from Salinas in Kansas on 28th February and returned there 67 hours 1 minute and 46 seconds later, on 2nd March. This was also the fastest non-stop unrefueled circumnavigation, with an average speed of 342mph. In February 2006 he set an absolute distance record of 25,766miles, flying from Kennedy Space Centre in an easterly direction and landing at Manston Airport in Kent after crossing the Atlantic for the second time. In March 2006, Fossett set a fourth and final record which was for absolute distance over a closed circuit. This took place from Salinas again and covered 25,294miles between 14th and 17th March. The Global Flyer was donated to the Smithsonian Institute in 2007 and is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum.
