Object history “Many Plains people are known for their elaborate headdresses. Many traditional headdresses, like this one, are decorated with Golden Eagle feathers, beadwork, wool cloth, and leather and tell of a warrior's achievements in battle. Individual feathers symbolize various coups, an act of bravery such as touching an enemy in battle, or war honors. Though it varied among tribes in the Plains region, notches and paint added to each feather told of a particular war honor. This headdress was probably made for ceremonial purposes or dances.” The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, IMCPL Digital Collections
