Summary

The w:facade of the Graham Memorial w:Presbyterian Church in w:Whitesburg, Kentucky, w:United States, featuring stones cut and placed to outline a map of w:Italy. Church built by immigrant w:stonemasons from Italy, including Frank Majority (Sr.), in 1934. Photo taken summer 1998. Self-made photo.

Note: many immigrant stonemasons from southern Italy came to live and work in southeast Kentucky (as well as other parts of w:Appalachia) in the early 20th century, where they used their expertise to build many churches, government buildings, and other structures. As there were often no Roman Catholic churches in the towns in which they lived, many joined Presbyterian churches, and, in this case, actually built the church. The carved "map" of Italy on the facade of the church in Whitesburg, Kentucky was defaced by local government decree during w:World War II but the outline is still visible.
