Samson Styles is an American documentarian, filmmaker, award-winning journalist[1][2][3][4][5] and co-founder of JayCity Enterprise.[6][7] He is known for Brooklyn Girls Fight Club, Joe's War, Black Is Beautiful: The N-Word, KILLING BEEF, and Netlix's documentary Crack: Cocaine, Corruption & Conspiracy.[3][8][9][10][11][12]

Early life

Samson Styles was born in New York on July 27, 1968, and grew up in the East New York Pink Houses.[1] At twelve, he was sentenced to eighteen months in a juvenile detention centre for robbery and truancy.[1][8]

Career

In June 2004, Styles was released from Fort Dix Federal Correctional Facility. After 4 months, Styles started filming a documentary on Brooklyn girls, named Brooklyn Girls Fight Club.[1][12] He later landed a permanent segment spot on a Black Entertainment Television (BET) show called The Chop Up in which Styles acquired the title "The Official Street Cat."

He also shot a segment on Ferguson for his BET program, "Second Chances."[1] He also hosted at Afrikan Poetry Theatre's annual Black History Month Film Festival 2021 as BET Correspondent.[13][14]

Styles is the co-owner of production company JayCity Enterprise[6] along with his wife Tyese Styles.

Awards and recognition

  • Received three awards from The New York Association of Black Journalists for investigative reporting, cultural and entertainment, and commentary.
  • Nominated in 2008 and 2009 by the NABJ for best investigative report.
  • Covered the Inauguration of Barack Obama with his team and won the 2010 NAACP Image Award for outstanding news information.
  • Received the President's Lifetime Achievement Award for volunteering with at-risk youth on June 11, 2023.
  • Killing Beef won Awards of Recognition in August 2018 at the IndieFEST Film Awards
  • Killing Beef won Best Documentary at film festivals and has been picked up by REVOLT TV
  • Spoke at LaGuardia Community College [1]
