Here's a quickie list of links that had solid info on DeGolyer, for use in drafting the article (reminder to novice editors: don't plagiarize — just consult!) —

Edward J. Marolda and Robert John Schneller. Shield and Sword: The United States Navy and the Persian Gulf War, Naval Institute Press, 2001, ISBN 1557504857, 517 pages.

p 7 "Exploitation of Middle Eastern crude seemed to offer a way to conserve strategically vital domestic supplies. In November 1943, a mission headed by Everette Lee DeGolyer, a well-known oil geologist, estimated the proven and probable reserves in the Persian Gulf region -- Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar -- to be from 25 billion to 300 billion barrels of oil. For Saudi Arabia alone, estimates ranged from 5 billion to 100 billion barrels. [4] 'The center of gravity of world oil production is shifting from the Gulf [of Mexico]-Caribbean area to the Middle East-to the Persian Gulf area,' DeGolyer said, 'and is likely to continue to shift until it is firmly established in this area.' "[5]

Endnote info: 4 = "Longrigg, _Oil in the Middle East_, 48, 372-73; Miller, _Search for Security_, 4-13, 55-63, 122-24, 141; Motter, The Persian Corridor; Palmer, On Course to Desert Storm, 14; Shwadran, The Middle East, Oil, and the Great Powers, 329; Yergin, The Prize, 178-95, 371-96." 5 = "Quoted in Yergin, The Prize, 393."

Oil in Texas: The Gusher Age, 1895-1945

p130: "... Among independents, Rycade, led by geologist Everette DeGolyer, spent heavily on the new exploration science. ... Everette DeGolyer's Rycade Oil Corporation made the first successful demonstration of the new technology in Fort Bend County, in July 1924, with its discovery of the Nash dome, the first dome in the Gulf Coast region to be discovered through geophysics."

p131: "Developed by Geophysical Research Corporation, Everette DeGolyer and John C. Karcher's new company, reflection seismology could detect higher frequencies and, thereby, collect additional data. The technique's developers also added equipment to record up to six separate channels simultaneously, permitting more precise comparison of 'reflections' of energy transmitted through the earth from controlled detonations. With the development of reflection seismography, by the end of the 1920s, geologists had a full range of techniques to apply in their search for oil.[63]" (endnote 63 would be listed somewhere on pp258-260, which aren't shown in Google preview)

p213-14 talks about them mapping and leasing an area in 1933 and identifying the formation with reflection seismology and Humble selling its interest based on that p265, note 3, mentions correspondence about East Texas

Hoping we can develop this article rapidly, as he's an important figure for the whole Southwest region. My stub version doesn't even scratch the surface of his philanthropy, his work with the Saturday Review, the DeGolyer Estate and related Dallas Arboretum, nor his collections at SMU and at his alma mater, the University of Oklahoma.Lawikitejana (talk) 18:21, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
