How do I use this entire website? (Unsigned: 18:24, 25 April 2018‎ Artodd)

Review

[edit]

@Artodd, Shalor (Wiki Ed), and KjLeuner: is this article for Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Santa Clara University/Literacy and Social Justice (Spring)? If so, could it please be tagged as such. Issues with this article include:

  • It's essaylike, with a strong viewpoint in both text and structure. Wikipedia articles should (should) adhere to a neutral point of view.
  • Its focus is on gender inequality, which does not really accord with the title.
  • Its scope mostly covers documentaries by women, but strays into documentaries about women (regardless of the gender of the filmmaker) which is a separate but related topic. If the article focussed only on the former, then it would intersect with the latter when it comes to (patterns of) topic/subject selection by women documentary makers.
  • There's an underpinning article missing in order to integrate properly into the encyclopedia, and that's the exact one that the title suggests: A factual and neutral and internationalist history of women documentary makers from Alice Guy-Blaché through to the present. A broad survey of inequality related issues can and should be dealt with as a section of that, and (where appropriate) individual instances of inequality can and should be provided as context for events and actions. From such an article there may well be a full article that can be split out from that section on the topic of gender inequality in the context of documentary filmmaking, but more likely there's a better article to be created on the topic of gender inequality in filmmaking first to enable as many sensible cross-linkages with related articles as possible.
  • title should be cased as "Women and documentary film" if it remains as is (though it should probably be changed)

I think this should be re-draftified as it's unlikely to happily survive in mainspace. WP:GGTF and/or WP:Women wikiproject members may be interested in providing further guidance/input/mentoring? ~Hydronium~Hydroxide~(Talk)~ 10:18, 17 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks Hydronium Hydroxide! These were my concerns as well. However one of the main issues right now is that the class ended last week and I'm not sure that the student will do anything with the userfied article. One thought I had was that if the content can be summarized enough (ie, the content that is properly sourced and about the women directors) it could just be added as a subsection to the main article on women in film. What do you think? In any case, I'll try to prune this some under my main account. It was something I was planning on doing, but had something else I had to finish first. • Ok - I've summarized a lot of the work and ended up getting rid of quite a lot in the process. I've expanded one section into a list as well. ReaderofthePack (。◕‿◕。) 14:33, 18 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
