Fictional character biography

[edit]

Jack Traven and his partner, Harry Temple, are introduced to the audience as they investigate reports of a bomb detonating in the elevator shafts of a building in downtown Los Angeles. Jack and Harry examine that the bomb was professionally made, and they use a small construction crane to keep the elevator in place so they can unload the passengers. The bomber overhears this plan, and detonates the bomb three minutes early. Jack and Harry manage to get all of the passengers out before the elevator falls. Jack realises that the bomber is still inside the building, and discover the bomber in one of the elevators. The bomber shoots at the two cops, which causes Harry to fall into the elevator and be taken hostage by the bomber, later revealed to be former cop Howard Payne. Jack shoots Harry in the leg, as a result of a conversation the two had earlier about ensuring a criminal doesn't escape with a hostage. Payne leaves and detonates an explosion which sends Traven flying backwards, and leading to Jack and Harry believing Payne to be dead. Jack and Harry receive medals for their bravery and strategic thinking in taking out the bomber, as Payne watches via television broadcast. The next morning a nearby bus explodes near Traven. While Traven investigates the wreckage, he notices a payphone ringing nearby. Payne reveals that he is alive and has rigged a city bus with a bomb. Once the bus reaches 50 miles-per-hour, the bomb will be armed, and will detonate if it goes any slower than that speed. Traven is given the name of the bus, and begins pursuing it. Traven warns the bus driver to stay above 50MPH, and makes a dangerous jump to board the vehicle.
