Questions for Highschool Essay

[edit]

Hi Robert! I am currently a Junior in Highschool and am doing an essay on why Wikipedia should be allowed to be used as a primary source for essays. I was wondering if you could assist me with this essay by answering 5 simple questions with however much detail as you want. The questions are as follows:

1. What motivated you to become a Wikipedia editor, and how has your experience shaped your view of Wikipedia’s credibility? 2. How does Wikipedia maintain overall accuracy despite being an open-editing platform? 3. How do you decide which sources are reliable enough to include in a Wikipedia article? 4. In your experience, how long does it typically take for errors or vandalism to be corrected on Wikipedia? 5. Do you believe Wikipedia should be considered a reliable source for academic work? Why or why not?

If you could answer these questions, that would be a tremendous help, and if there is anything else you want to elaborate on, feel free too. Thank you! GodSmasher (talk) 02:10, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there! I’m pleasantly surprised for you to ask me these questions. I’d of course be willing to answer some questions but firstly I’d like to know why you picked me to ask these questions. I’m just curious why you ask me out of thousands of editors. Kind regards, Robertus Pius (TalkContribs) 02:38, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I chose you because the articles you prioritize in our of important historical figures that often require students to do extra resource for, which I find most useful for my argument. I also stand with a lot of your personal beliefs, but that it besides the point. I'm very happy that I was able to get a response from you, and am excited to hear your answers to my questions! GodSmasher (talk) 02:49, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’m glad we share some personal beliefs. And yes I tend to focus on the areas of my interests, mostly history and anything to do with royalty. I’d love to answer your questions! If you don’t mind it actually a bit late where I live and I have school in the morning. I can answer the questions probably tomorrow evening. That way I don’t rush through the answers as well. Would that be ok? Kind regards, Robertus Pius (TalkContribs) 03:17, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great! I'm tired myself so I don't mind waiting lol. Can't wait to hear back from you. GodSmasher (talk) 03:19, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I do not mean to bother you, but I'm just reminding you about my questions. GodSmasher (talk) 01:27, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! Sorry I was really busy with homework today. Here’s my answers!
1. What motivated you to become a Wikipedia editor, and how has your experience shaped your view of Wikipedia’s credibility?
My motivation was mostly my passion for history and royal genealogy. In the beginning most of my edits were image related, meaning I would just add images to the articles. Then over time I started editing more of the articles themselves. I think Wikipedia in general can be used as a credible source. I myself use it as a source for much of my royal genealogy research. I’ve made a royal family tree that has over 4,000 individuals and spans from the Middle Ages to contemporary royals.
2. How does Wikipedia maintain overall accuracy despite being an open-editing platform?
I’ll be the first one to say there is LOTS of vandalism on Wikipedia. But there’s hundreds if not thousands of editors that devote all their contributions to reverting vandalism. Sources are always confirmed by experienced editors who know what they’re doing and are knowledgeable in the topic of the article. Sources from uncredited or unknown websites are normally reverted.
3. How do you decide which sources are reliable enough to include in a Wikipedia article?
It has to be a credible source. Normally blog pages and things of that nature are not acceptable. Archives, books, and creditable news outlets are preferred. Though I don’t edit a lot with sources so I’m not super knowledgeable with source policy on Wikipedia.
4. In your experience, how long does it typically take for errors or vandalism to be corrected on Wikipedia?
Depends on the importance of the article. If it’s a high traffic article (meaning there’s lots readers going to the article) such as Joe Biden’s or Donald Trump’s article, vandalism will probably be reverted within minutes. As I said before, there’s hundreds of editors that focus solely on fighting vandalism.
5. Do you believe Wikipedia should be considered a reliable source for academic work? Why or why not?
For the most part it can be used as a reliable source. I think its always good to use caution when getting any sources for a paper or an essay. But, they’re so many passionate and knowledgeable editors who make sure the information in articles are as accurate as possible. We have debates daily all across Wikipedia about small details to make sure everything’s accurate. There’s a lot of work going into Wikipedia and it really is an incredible website.
I hope my answers are satisfactory. Let me know if there’s anything else you need from me! Kind regards, Robertus Pius (TalkContribs) 02:54, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for your answers! this will help me out a lot on the essay. GodSmasher (talk) 04:37, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. Hope your essay goes well! Kind regards, Robertus Pius (TalkContribs) 14:50, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
