[edit]

I've removed the state seal image, as it is currently up for deletion on Commons. According to Alaska's state legislature, "A person may not use or make a die or impression of the state seal for any advertising or commercial purpose, unless written permission has first been obtained from the lieutenant governor".[1] Additionally, the previous image states it was created in 1955, but the license used claims it is in the public domain because the image was created before 1923. Obviously can't be both, so I simply removed the image all together. - auburnpilot talk 20:01, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As the image page says, it's in the public domain because its copyright was not renewed. Notice that the tag says "In most cases". This is not one of those times. Raul654 (talk) 20:18, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am quite well aware of what the tag says. I'm not a copyright expert, so this may fall into that prior to the act of '76, 28 year protection category. - auburnpilot talk 20:30, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Political cartoons are by nature POV, and this one in particular holds a very strong POV. We should NOT hav an image which such strong POV showing up on the Main Page. I selected a much more neutral image, but it was reverted. Please find another neutral image to replace this POV image. Kingturtle (talk) 21:34, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the image you added because of the deletion discussion that was started on commons. However, after I looked into the situation, I believe the seal of Alaska may in fact be in the public domain, as it was designed in 1910. The editor who nominated the image for deletion simply stated that he/she thought the image must have been created after 1959, when Alaska became a state. With that said, I doubt the image will be deleted, so feel free to reinclude it if you wish. - auburnpilot talk 22:01, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
