Old discussion

[edit]

Dang--I didn't see this earlier. The dog breeds project said that there's a page named "Dog breeds" that lists known breeds of dogs. In fact that link was a redirect to the *actual* page, which is List of dog breeds. I think we envision that, at some time, "dog breed" might be an actual article discussing what makes a breed, how they get that way, what influence breed clubs and kennel clubs have on breeds, and so on. Also, it's more wikilike to have a list of things titled "List of things".

I see that this project instead has "List of cat breeds" redirecting to "Cat breeds" instead of the other way 'round--I suggest that it be reversed. Fortunately the new horse breeds project figured that out. I'm proposing that we make List of cat breeds the actual list and Cat breeds a redirect to it unless someone wants to write a definitive discussion of cat breeds (whatever that means). Discussion? If OK, we can ask List of cat breeds to be deleted so we can move Cat breeds there-- Elf | Talk 20:44, 11 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I've been working on the organization in this project for the past couple of days. I seperated the wild cats into their own Category:Felines. I moved the list of cat breeds from the cat breed article to it's own page. I've been moving the breed pages to a title that doesn't include the word "cat" (unless the official breed name actually has the word or it's needed to differentiate from something else, then i used (cat) in the title), since it's a bit redundant, but I haven't finished this yet. I also created Category:Cat_types and Category:Cat_health and started finding articles that should be in these categories. I have also noticed that the format for the pages isn't consistent at all. I'll probably tackle that sometime in the future. If anyone else is currently involved in/interested in this project, help would be greatly appreciated. Lost History?

[edit]

Okay, I'm lost--did someone do a 'cut and paste' move or a merge that dumped a discussion of the way to list recognized cat breeds? Can't find it--checked list of cat breeds and cat breeds as well. Help! Quill 22:28, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I'll contribute whenever I can, I am shocked at the things about cats people have written that are actual errors. Thanks for pointing out this project Lachatdelarue!

American Keuda - Is it really a breed?

[edit]

The more I look at the information on this supposed breed, the more I think this is an elaborate joke. Look at what the acromym stands for. The pictures of this breed are all pictures of other breeds and types of cats and the only recognizing organization is the one that made up the breed. No established origanization has a reference to this as even a developing breed. The whole thing is highly suspicious and I really think needs to be removed as a listed breed until someone can prove that this is legitamite. Just getting a bunch of cats together and letting them have babies does not qualify as a breed, even if you start calling it one. Pschemp 05:05, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I think it should stay on the list. There are "designer mix-breeds" (i.e. Pekeapoo) on the dog breeds list, even though they aren't recognized by any all-breed kennel clubs. It seems to me (without any further research than the article here), that the people breeding them are trying to create a breed. The word "recognised" does need to be removed from the description of the List of cat breeds, since some of the breeds listed are new and not recognised by any major clubs yet. Lachatdelarue (talk) 14:21, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)
 • The definition of breed is "Function: noun: a group of animals or plants presumably related by descent from common ancestors AND visibly similar in most characters; especially: such a group differentiated from the wild type under domestication" and looking at this page with "examples" ([1]) there is nothing visibly similar. At least Pekeapoos have a unifying look. I think that this cat type doesn't fit the definition of breed yet and so should be dropped. These examples would not breed true in any way because their characteristics are so diverse.Pschemp 15:03, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)
How about we change the AK's category to cat type instead of cat breed, describe them as such in their article, and add the articles in the type category as a separate list on the list of cat breeds (see List of dog breeds). (Go ahead and make these changes if you want, I have to leave for work in a few minutes.) And for reference, Pekeapoos (and many other poo-crosses) from different litters can look very different. Lachatdelarue (talk) 15:14, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)
 • Sounds like a good idea. I did my best to make the changes conform, if it isn't quite right go ahead and fix it. Pschemp 16:23, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

If you want help

[edit]

I show cats and know people who have almost every single one of these breeds and pictures. In addition, I have access to email lists for CFA where we could send a call for articles. I think it would get a good response. Let me know what you think we should ask for. Pschemp 06:18, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

FIFe

[edit]

I'm working on adding the FIFe to the tables of the breeds they recognize. Currently, the standards aren't available on their webpage, so I'm just putting the name in the table to reference that they recognize the breed. I also created a stub for them and added them to the list of show cat orgs. Lachatdelarue (talk) 16:13, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)

coloration

[edit]

I need some input, which is the more correct title for an article on points: points (fur color) or point coloration? An anonymous editor created the latter article, and I can't decide under which title to merge the information. Lachatdelarue (talk) 15:29, 6 Nov 2004 (UTC)

In my not-so-humble opinion: points (coat colour). As far as I know, show animals don't have 'fur'  ;) (I only know this because I've been beaten up about it) Quill 21:50, 6 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I agree with Quill Pschemp 05:13, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

article categories

[edit]

I think tagging every article this committee works on with these proposed Article Categories will get very messy. If they're only going to be used during the whole deletion/transition/whatever thing, then fine, they can help us keep tabs on contributions. But once members really start working on cat-related articles, every cat article will qualify for a half-dozen superfluous categories. --LuciferBlack 06:00, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Move and cleanup

Hello. I've moved this page Wikipedia:WikiProject Cats and heavily cleaned up and reformatted the page to ensure that it was strictly about writing encyclopedia articles. Thanks you.--Sean Black (talk) 04:42, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you delete the categories and the userboxes and the templates? --GeorgeMoneyTalk  Contribs 04:54, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The categories were self-referential and did NOT belong in article space. The others were not conducive towards improving cat-related articles. --Rory096 05:23, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great Work

[edit]

I want to say that this WikiProject has improved a lot since yesterday. Great work on refocusing and listening to others' suggestions.

Suggestion

[edit]

One way for a new WikiProject to start fixing up articles is running a collaboration. It's fun, it's easy, and it's efficient (because it focuses most of the editing on one page).

Starting one is very easy. The participants vote on the next collaboration, and once it is chosen, they work together to edit the page.

A bi-monthly collaboration would work very well here. Having an article be the Wikiproject's focus for half a month is great because it gives enough time for everyone to put in their input.

What do you all think?

That's a good idea, I like it. Kitty the Random 00:11, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Linking

[edit]

Is there anywhere in this project that has a list of links relating to cats? If not, I'll be happy to start it off. Maybe sections like "domestic cats", "wild cats", and "cats in mythology and religion" or something. What do you think? Kitty the Random 00:11, 24 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment?

[edit]

I noted just how many articles there are out there, and how few of them relating to cats are really of any length or quality at all. Would the other members of this project be interested in assessing articles for their current quality and importance? I personally think knowing what we have is probably one of the best ways to determine how to improve it. There are some details about assessment at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Assessment FAQ. I look forward to any and all responses. Badbilltucker 17:59, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should have the articles that are in serious need of help at the top of importance. The article 'Cat' was a featured article and does not need to be at the top of importance.
Importance is more about how important the specific article is to the project, not about how important improving the specific article is to the project. One of the things we're going to have to deal with over time is how subsequent additions to a given article will either improve or detract from the quality of a given article, and that's why importance is more or less determined without regard to the current status of the article. Clearly, when and if the time comes to create an article improvement drive for this project, or for individuals simply looking to improve articles, taking into account the relative importance of the article and the current status of an article makes sense. I hope that clarifies things a little. Also, I should note here that the assessment had already begun before I started on it yesterday, but that the project page itself had not been put in the category. I corrected that little discrepancy, and now accessing the category from the project page should be a bit easier. Badbilltucker 14:06, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

request for article

[edit]

I would like to see an article about Scarlett the cat who saved her kittens form that fire in Brooklyn. I added her to the List of historical cats. I don't know how to upload a photo and deal with all the copyright issues. There are plenty photos of her availale from North Shore who would be happy to publicize her story.Lisapollison 03:28, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • I'm no good with photos myself, so I didn't include any, but the basic article now exists, with a photo request on the talk page. She's also included on the Scarlet disambiguation page. In the process of creating the article, I noticed that the North Shore Animal League itself has no article yet. Right now I am rather strapped for time, but if you can get together the information for at least a basic article on the League, I am certain that it is significant enough to avoid deletion. Unfortunately, I can see how it might be possible that, in time, someone might call for the deletion of Scarlett's separate article, or maybe request that it be merged into the League's article. On that basis, an article on the league itself would definitely be in order. Thanks for the information. Also, if you can find a specific source indicating that the fire was in Brooklyn, so that can be included in the article, I would be most gratified. Badbilltucker 15:05, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cats Portal?

[edit]

Would any of you be interested in seeing this project set up a cats portal? I would be the first to acknowledge that we have a rather small base of articles to work with, but we could set up the page so that we would have at least one of the wild or big cats featured, one of the domestic cat breeds included on a rotating basis, and, given the sheer number of them, one of the cats in fiction/literature featured on a rotating basis. Also, it would give us possibly a better chance of attracting new members and maybe make a few more articles about specific noteworthy cats, like Cat Mandu and Scarlett the cat. I look forward to any responses, positive or negative. Badbilltucker 17:51, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I recently got Portal:Dogs (yes, I'm a double agent! ;-) up and running. I'm willing to set up one for cats too. Rfrisbietalk 22:25, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd love to create a portal. I'd help out. DoomsDay349 22:47, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Portal:Cats is up and running! I set up the basic elements and added it to Portal:List. I also set up Portal:Cats/Selected article, Portal:Cats/Selected picture, and Portal:Cats/Selected breed so they can randomly display any items we add to their lists. More "Did you knows" and other types of sections can be added as well. Feel free to enhance the portal as you see fit. :-) Rfrisbietalk 04:22, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It looks great! With a bit of work, we could maybe even get it on the featured portals list. I added it to the list of new portals on the Wikipedia:Community Portal, so we might get a few people from there to help out with it. I think we might try to get the articles on the various felidae on a slower rotation (once a month, maybe), and have the cat breeds on a faster rotation (say, once a week). We will have to try to improve several of the articles so that the ones showcased display the "good quality" required for a featured portal. I'll try getting together a list of the various cats from history which can be included on the portal, and set up at least the best basic articles I can on them. Then we could add one section (maybe two) on the various cats from history and literature. There are a lot of articles on fictional cats already, and I found a list which has the names of a lot of real cats which I can at least start to create stubs on. I'm more than a little surprised about how quickly this happened, so sorry if I sound like I'm at a loss for words, but I really am. This was wonderful work, and I'm pleased and stunned by the quality of it. Thank you! Badbilltucker 16:55, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I set up a "random" rotation design, like on Wikipedia:Featured content. It's much easier to maintain and allows variety based on all the items we put on the lists. Rfrisbietalk 17:03, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

If I joined this WikiProject, it would be for the sole purpose of maintaining Warriors articles. Would that be alright? (I plan on one day creating a WikiProject for warriors anyway, but for the time being at least). DoomsDay349 21:50, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The purpose of this project is to maintain all articles related to Felidae, real and fictional. Based on what I can see from a cursory scan of the page you linked to, those articles would probably qualify. On that basis, there should be no problem. You might want to consider helping us to expand any of the articles which relate to the particular kinds of cats which are mentioned in those articles too, as those articles would have a direct bearing upon your own articles. But, as those articles do deal with cats, they fall under the scope of this project. You might want to check with Wikipedia:WikiProject Fictional series to inform them of the existence of the articles as well. But these articles do qualify under the existing project scope, and you would be welcome to join the project on that basis. Badbilltucker 14:41, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Day Awards

[edit]

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Breeds notability guidelines

There are currently a number of active discussions for deletion regarding some little known breeds of dogs. It occurs to me that there might occasionally also arise situations where the same thing is faced in cat breeds. It has been proposed that perhaps a guideline for Notability (breeds) be established. If anyone who has some experience regarding this sort of thing would care to do so, I and I think several others would be immensely appreciative. Thank you. Iberian Lynx

[edit]

Can somebody to check the Iberian Linx article, please?Anselmocisneros 11:41, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

 • I have proposed Iberian Lynx for the Wikipedia:Cleanup. It needs some serious cleaning up. There are many grammatical and spelling mistakes, some confusing sections and subjective statements. There are no sources cited. It would be interesting if the reference and external links could also be cleanup a bit. This article does deserve better... --Francisco Valverde 19:04, 30 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've just written an article about odd-eyed cats. It's my first cat-related article! Please let me know what you think of it! :) I used pictures of my own cat to avoid copyright problems, if that's okay. If you can improve the article in any way, please feel free to edit it! :) --Candy-Panda 12:25, 3 February 2007 (UTC) [reply]

category proposed for deletion _again_

[edit]

Category:Ailurophiles, which survived an Afd in October, has been put back up for deletion by a user with no new fresh reason why. Please go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2007_March_4#Category:Ailurophiles and vote accordingly. Chris 18:33, 4 March 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Hello, I know I'm new around these particular parts of WP but I'm going to try to drive Serval to, at least good article. Pure selfishness really because it's my picture in the taxobox but I can't understand why so many good big(-ish) cat articles exist (like lion, tiger, leopard etc) without them being GA or even FA. So, I'm making a start and would love advice, help and criticism on the way. Cheers everyone. The Rambling Man 20:28, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Short-tailed domestic cats

[edit]

Please if someone can tell me, is there any article about domestic cats with short tails? My English is not good enough to write such article, but that is very interesting.Klarissae 23:08, 14 March 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Scopes of WikiProjects

[edit]

I thought I should give notice here, since I've given this WikiProject as an example of scoping I feel has gone off track. See discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject reform#The scope. -- Ned Scott 00:45, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have deleted about 90% of the content of Talk:Maine Coon, as it was turning into a chat room. Corvus cornix 23:33, 24 April 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Translated into Spanish

[edit]

Hello, Is it possible to have the cat category pages translated into Spanish? There are huge problems in Spain with strays, and educating the public on TNR and Feral Cat Colonies, as well as humane treatment and spay/neuter options is extremely important. People have tried to upload pages to the spanish site, but was told it was propaganda? The same info exists on the English site, but in Spain is propaganda?

There should be a way we can help. Thank you. Amyinfo 11:07, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You'll have to try Wikipedia:Translation or es:Wikipedia:Artículos solicitados, unless there just happen to be any bilinguists watching. Hope that helps. --Quiddity 18:37, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RFC

[edit]

I deleted the Gallery in the Snowshoe (cat) article as it clearly is unencyclopedic and violates WP:NOT. One user has constantly reverted this, and I would like comment from other cat wikiproject users. thank you VanTucky 17:50, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A gallery that large definitely doesn't belong in an article that short. There was recently some discussion of the same problem on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Dogs - consensus was that galleries should be avoided in general unless they're there to illustrate specific variations. The images on this article don't do anything of the sort - although the article describes several color variations ("blue, lilac, lynx, fawn, chocolate, and seal points"), all of the images appear to be of seal-point cats.
Also, the infobox on that article looked terrible (gray borders, no outside padding). I've converted it to use the format I saw on Maine Coon, which looks more like a standard infobox. There doesn't appear to be any standard cat-breed infobox template, though. There's Infobox Dogbreed for dogs, though - should I put together something similar for felines? Standardization is good. :) Zetawoof(ζ) 22:50, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Re: Infobox standardization, yes please. :)
Re: Galleries, yes unencyclopedic. Similar problem at Tuxedo cat#Gallery of various pattern bicolors, though with some useful variants. --Quiddity 23:39, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox

[edit]

(This deserves its own section, IMO.)

Example, using Burmese (cat) for a test case. How's it look? The breed standard bit took a bunch of tweaking to look right; feel free to edit the template (here in my userspace for now) if you think you can make it look even better. Zetawoof(ζ) 00:02, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Poke? Seriously, I'd like some feedback before I start applying this to existing articles. Zetawoof(ζ) 22:38, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. Go for it. The beauty of standard templates is they can be tweaked after implementation too :) --Quiddity 19:05, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, here we go! I've done most the breeds in Category:Cat breeds that start with A. I'll continue as I have time. Made a few changes to the template in the process, too... no template, however well-designed, survives contact with actual articles, I guess. Zetawoof(ζ) 20:19, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Geneaology of Domestic Cats

[edit]

I own a book called The Atlas of Cats of the World by Dennis Kelsey-Wood. In it, it has a chart of the Genealogy of Domestic Cats. Could something similar be done on Wikipedia--Lionheart Omega 22:34, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WP:TOL template

Capitalization

[edit]

These edits of mine in Ocelot which changed "Ocelot" to "ocelot" in sentences like "While the Ocelot is well equipped for an arboreal lifestyle" were reverted by User:UtherSRG with the comment (on my talk page):

Please don't change caps
Several Wikiprojects endorse using caps for species common names. See WP:BIRD for the rationale.

I asked for clarification on the bird project talk page and received this reply:

Yes, FWIW the edits you made were entirely along bird SOP. HBW uses it so I guess HMW would use it too.

I'm pretty sure that this sort of capitalisation isn't standard English and that the intent of the policy has been misread. What do other people think? I've asked about this on Talk:Ocelot but received no response - hopefully someone here can provide guidance. — ciphergoth 16:43, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life#Article titles and common names and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (fauna)#Capitalization of common names of species. It says that there is no set policy, but different wikiprojects have different standards. It does say than names of groups of species or an individual creature of indeterminate species (mouse, monkey, etc.) are not capitalized. I would personally suggest that the more common the name, the less likely it is to be capitalized (dog vs. Bald Eagle). For ocelot, it is one specific species, so I guess an argument could be made for capitalization. In this case the capitalization only seem to date back to February 26 of this year, so I guess you could argue that consensus for ocelot has generally been for lowercase, but it depends on how much edit warring you want to get into. --Joelmills 17:16, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've been doing Google searches like 'cougar "new york times"' and 'badger Times' and so on, choosing sites noted for the highest standards of proofing. All stories on the animal give its name in lower case in sentences like "A cougar attacked two bicyclists on Thursday" or "Ministers are poised to lift a 10-year ban on badger culling and allow large-scale kills across the countryside". I'd be interested if there's one counterexample from a similar site where such a sentence would capitalise the name of the animal. — ciphergoth 21:22, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Puma

[edit]

I invite participation on the discussion page at Cougar. I have suggested a move to Puma as it is the more generally accepted common name internationally (see links there on the talk page). If one visits scientific journals and searches the two names, puma is used many times more often. On the Journal of Zoology for instance, Puma produces 259 hits while Cougar produces only 42, many of which use the common name Puma in the title. An administrator will be needed to make the move as Puma already redirects to Cougar.--Counsel 00:45, 23 June 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Bicolor should be Piebald?

[edit]

A while back on talk:bicolor cat, someone mentioned that bicolor cats are really a special case of piebald coloration in felines, but piebald seems to reflect only horses. What should be done about this? All I really do is police the images on the article, but the only other edits seem to be people adding pictures of their kittens. Should I put information on the piebald page about cats and link to bicolor? Should I try to coordinate other patterns to create a page about cat patterns? IS there a page about cat patterns, come to think of it? Kuronue 15:18, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Problem is, the more accurate term is piebald (as bicolor ignores the fact that in cats, it can produce a coat of three colors - namely the calico). If you take a second look at the piebald article, you will see that it applies to cats as well (in the last paragraph), in addition to horses and some other animals. I would recommend linking the piebald page to bicolor cat. The closest we have to an article cat patterns is cat coat genetics, which deals with this subject and many others.--Ramdrake 16:03, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but it's tacked on as an afterthought... and colorpoint is a generic article with info about cats and rabbits... I think we either need to move all the information to generic articles like piebald and colorpoint, generic articles about coat colors in animals that would be cross-project; or else we need to make all the articles cat-specific, which would involve the creation of Colorpoint(cat) Kuronue 15:26, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

York Chocolate Cat

[edit]

I'm looking for a picture to accompany this article. I know York Chocolate Cats are a new breed and probably pretty rare, but if anyone has one and can take a picture, or if you know where we can find a non-copyrighted picture, that would be awesome. Animals project proposal

[edit]

I think it's both a pity and somewhat illogical that we have no animal WikiProject despite the fact that there are over 20 projects that are basically its daughters. There are also other projects that could emerge from it in the future, such as one on animal behavior. The project would provide a central place for people from all animal projects to talk, a central set of guidelines for articles on animals and zoology, and an assessment system for articles related to animals. If you are interested in creating such a project please visit Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tree of life#Animals project to discuss. Richard001 09:00, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The following projects would come under the parentage of this project:

Ethoxyquin

[edit]

Could someone with knowledge of the subject please take a look at Ethoxyquin. This is a pet food additive (Kaytee lists it as "a preservative") that every site that isn't Wikipedia says is potentially harmful. The current article reads almost like propaganda, as it references an FDA statement from 1989. There are many reports from the FDA in the 18 year interim that suggest the opposite, besides the fact that the American FDA isn't the ultimate authority on everything. ~ JohnnyMrNinja 03:33, 25 August 2007 (UTC) [reply]

Rename to cat from (cat)

[edit]

I notice some of the articles have brackets around the cat portion of the name such as Siamese (cat) see the rest here Category:Cat breeds. Why don't we just call it "Siamese cat" along with the others ?? Chessy999 10:09, 26 August 2007 (UTC) [reply]
