Éric Marty (born 3 January 1955[1]) is a French writer, essayist, and professor of contemporary French literature at the Paris Diderot University. He is also the editor of the complete works of Roland Barthes.[2][3]

Biography

Marty's first engagement was political. From 1970 to 1973, he was involved in the Trotskyist organization "Lutte Ouvrière" (Workers' Struggle). He references this significant experience in his reflections on his friendship with Roland Barthes in his book “Roland Barthes, Le métier d’écrire” published in 2006. After studying at Lycée Condorcet and then at the University of Paris VII, he passed the agrégation exam in modern literature in 1979, the most competitive and prestigious examination for civil service in the French public education system.

In 1980, he taught French literature, linguistics, and philosophy at the French Institute in the United Kingdom, in London. He later returned to France and completed his doctoral thesis (in 1985) at the Sorbonne under the supervision of Robert Mauzi.

In 1988, Marty joined the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) as a research fellow at the Institute of Modern Texts and Manuscripts. There, he worked on the Journal de Gide for the prestigious Pléiade Library (Gallimard) and explored the genetics of texts, particularly focusing on the works of René Char and theoretical texts by Roland Barthes.

In 1996, he defended his state doctorate at Paris IV, also focusing on the Journal de Gide, under the supervision of Michel Raimond, with Pierre Brunel presiding over the jury.

In 1998, Marty was appointed professor of contemporary literature at the University of Paris VII, joining the UFR STD (now known as LAC - Letters, Arts, Cinema), where he taught and led the "Littérature au présent" research group, later renamed "Pensée et création contemporaine" (Thought and Contemporary Creation). Since 2013, he has been a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France.

Marty is an emeritus professor at Université Paris-Cité (formerly Paris Diderot Paris 7), where he led the "Pensée et création contemporaines" (PCC) research group until 2022.

In his 2021 work Le Sexe des Modernes. Pensée du Neutre et théorie du genre, Marty reflects on the 1960s, a period when sexual issues became collective and social questions. He discusses how modern thinkers like Jacques Lacan and Roland Barthes grappled with a society saturated with discussions of sexuality. Michel Foucault termed this the "sexuality apparatus," where sexual topics were widely debated. Marty highlights how figures like Lacan, Barthes, Jacques Derrida, and Gilles Deleuze introduced the notion of the "Neutral" into this "massive" concept of sexuality—a notion that aligns with the term "gender" as used from the 1990s onward.[4][5][6]

Marty also directs the "Littera" and "Le marteau sans maître" collections at Manucius publishing.

On the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Marty supports the Israeli state, notably through his 2003 work Bref séjour à Jérusalem.[7][8]

In May 2022, LGBTQ+ activists violently disrupted a lecture Marty gave at the University of Geneva, accusing him of transphobia. The university initially announced it would file a complaint but later reversed its decision.[9][10][11]
