On 13 October 2024, a drone launched by Hezbollah from Lebanon launched a missile at the Israeli Zar'it barracks before exploding near the town of Binyamina, Israel.[2][3][4] The attack injured at least 61 military personnel, with at least 4 killed and 7 seriously injured according to the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) statement.[2][5][6][7] The attack, part of a larger rocket barrage, saw two drones deployed, with one intercepted over the sea while the other penetrated into Israeli territory.[2]

No alarms were triggered, and the IDF are investigating the lack of warning signals.[2] Medical teams responded swiftly, airlifting several of the critically injured to Sheba and Rambam Medical Centers.[2] The attack occurred amid the escalating Israel–Hezbollah conflict, which in previous months witnessed a series of Israeli airstrikes that decimated much of Hezbollah's senior leadership, including Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah.[8][9][10] Moreover, its military arsenal and infrastructure were significantly degraded by airstrikes, which were followed by a ground invasion of Lebanon, officially aimed at weakening Hezbollah and pushing it from the Israeli-Lebanese border.[11][9][12]

Strike

[edit]

On 13 October 2024, a drone launched by Hezbollah from Lebanon entered Israeli airspace and fired a missile at Zar'it barracks before crashing near the town of Binyamina, located in the Haifa District of Israel.[13][1] The incident resulted in injuries to at least 61 people, with four individuals reported in critical condition. Medical teams, including a helicopter, were dispatched to the scene to evacuate and provide emergency care to the wounded.[13] Israeli Channel 12 reported that Hezbollah successfully deceived the Israeli air defense system by firing a barrages of missile to cover the drone.[14]

During the attack, three drones were launched from Lebanon; two of the drones were intercepted, while one managed to penetrate deep into Israeli territory, crashing in the Binyamina area. The drone incursion occurred without the activation of alarm systems that would normally signal such an attack.[13]

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the drone strike and said it was in response to the Israeli airstrike on Bachoura on 10 October that killed 22 Lebanese people and injured another 117.[15][16] Hezbollah said it targeted the Israel Defense Forces' soldiers at the Tsnobar logistics base for the Golani Brigade in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, who were "preparing to participate in the attack on Lebanon". [2][13][17][18]

Casualties

[edit]

According to Israel Army Radio, four Israeli soldiers were killed and at least 61 were wounded as a result of the attack.[2] Magen David Adom reported that four people were critically injured, seven seriously, and 14 moderately. Three of the injured were airlifted to Sheba Medical Center, while two were taken to Rambam Health Care Campus. An additional 37 victims were transported to various hospitals by ambulance.[2][13]
