Bolesław Prus Monument is a bronze statue in Warsaw, Poland, located in the Downtown district, at the Jan Twardowskiego Square, near the intersection of Krakowskie Przedmieście and Karowa Streets. It is dedicated to Bolesław Prus, a 19th- and 20th-century novelist, and a leading figure in the history of Polish literature and philosophy. The monument was designed by Anna Kamieńska-Łapińska and unveiled on 15 January 1977.

The monument was dedicated to Bolesław Prus, a 19th- and 20th-century novelist, and a leading figure in the history of Polish literature and philosophy. It was first proposed in 1916 in the magazine Tygodnik Illustrowany. The idea was revisited in the early 1960s, by the radio drama The Matysiaks. Money for its construction was donated by Warsaw artisans.[1]

In 1962, four teams of artists were awarded in the contest for the monument design.[2] However, non of the project were uses, with Anna Kamieńska-Łapińska being commitioned for a new design instead. The monument was unvailed on 15 January 1977.[1][3]

Characteristics

The monument is located in the Jan Twardowskiego Square, near the intersection of Krakowskie Przedmieście and Karowa Streets. Prior to the Second World War, in this place stood a tenements building that housed the printing house of newspaper Kurier Warszawski. Bolesław Prus was one of its editors.[1]

The monument consits of a bronze statue with the height of 3.6 m, placed on a low granite pedestal. It depicts Bolesław Prus as an elderly man in a pensive pose, holding a walking cane, and with his hands behind his back.[1][4]
