Ajay Pratap Singh is an Indian academician, librarian and library administrator. He is currently serving as the Director General, National Library of India, Kolkata since March 2021.[1][2][3][4][5][6]. Earlier he administered Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation (RRRLF)[7], the only government funding agency and autonomous organization for public libraries in India under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India from June 2020 to Sept 2023. He is also Professor of Library and Information Science at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi[5][8]

Life and education

Prof. Singh was born in a middle-class family on 29 December 1973 in Lalitpur, a city in the Lalitpur district, Uttar Pradesh. He started his schooling in the Lalitpur, the native place of Prof. Singh. He is an alumnus of Dr. H.S. Gaur University, Sagar, India; University of Delhi and Bundelkhand University, Jhansi, India from where he pursued his Graduation, Masters and PhD respectively[5][8]

Career

Prof. Singh started his career as Photo Documentation Assistant in a project at Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi in 1997. After six months he was appointed as lecturer (part time) at Meerabai Women’s Polytechnic, New Delhi (Govt. of NCT of Delhi). He joined as an Assistant Professor of Library and Information Science at the Bundelkhand University, Jhansi, India in the year 1999 and after that he was appointed as an Associate Professor at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India in the year 2007 and got promoted as Professor[5][8]. Prof. Singh has teaching and research experience for more than 27 years and while serving at these organizations/universities he has held various administrative position like the Head of the Department of Library and Information Science, Administrative Warden, Hostel Coordinator, etc.[5][8]

While serving as the Director General, RRRLF and National Library of India, Ministry of Culture he has taken many initiatives for the promotion and development of Libraries throughout the country[9][10][11][12][13]. During Covid 19 pandemic he worked continuously and convinced the officials and bureaucrats of government of states for investing in the public libraries in their region along with the funding support of the Government of India[13][14][15][16][17][18][19].

Prof. Singh has been appointed as a member of various apex committees of academic/administrative organizations, academic and professional bodies, etc[5][8][20]. Few of them are:

Member, Executive Council, Bundelkhand University, Jhansi, India for 2006-07.

Council Member, INFLIBNET Board, Information and Libraries Network Centre (Inter University Centre of U.G.C., India) since 2021 till date[21].

Member (Chancellor’s Nominee), Executive Council, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India since 2024[22].

Foundation Member, Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation (RRRLF), Government of India from 2020 till 2023 and 2024 till date.

Member, Standing Committee, Science and Technology Libraries Section, International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) for terms 2009-2013 and 2013-2017.

Convener, Agricultural Libraries SIG, International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) for terms 2013-2015 and 2015-2017[23]

Member, Standing Committee, Metropolitan Libraries Section, International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) for term 2017-2021.

Prof. Singh has been a member of Board of Studies for more than two dozen universities and academic bodies including Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), India.

Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) Award/Grant by International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) in 2008[5]

Rashtra Bhasha Gaurav Award by Akhil Bhartiya Hindi Sevi-Sansthan, Allahabad in 2012.[5]

2023 Leadership Award by Society for Library Professionals and Special Library Association, Asia Community on 13th April 2023.[5]
