Allama Imam Hayat is a Islamic scholar, social reformer, and political leader based in Bangladesh, known as the Imam of the Age.[1] He is the founder of the World Sunni Movement and the promoter of the World Humanity Revolution worldwide.[2][3] As the chairman of the registered political party, Humanity Revolution Bangladesh[4][5][6], Imam Hayat has been a vocal critic of Wahhabism and the Saudi regime, while also advocating for human rights, religious unity, and social justice. His leadership in both religious and political spheres has garnered significant influence, particularly in Bangladesh and within global Sunni communities.[7]

Family and Legacy

[edit]

Allama Imam Hayat is born to a Muslim family in Chittagong, with his father Syed Saifur Rahman Nizami Shah being a Islamic scholar and winner of Ekushey Padak.[8][9] Imam Hayat is the eldest son and has followed in his father’s footsteps, continuing the family's legacy of Islamic scholarship and social activism. His commitment to promoting Sunni unity, religious reform, and social justice has left a lasting impact on the global Islamic community.[10]

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Allama Imam Hayat was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh, into a family with a strong lineage to the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. His father, Syed Saifur Rahman Nizami Shah, was a renowned Islamic scholar and recipient of the prestigious Ekushey Padak for his contributions to Islamic research.[11] Following in his father's scholarly footsteps, Imam Hayat completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Chemistry from Chittagong University and later pursued an LLM.

He also received extensive Islamic education from his father, who authored seminal works like Tafsir Mashahidul Iman (a Bengali commentary on the Quran) and Tafhimul Bukhari Sharif (a commentary on Sahih Bukhari).[12]

Religious Contributions

[edit]

Allama Imam Hayat has made significant religious contributions by reinterpreting and promoting Islamic festivals and imporatant days with deeper spiritual and social meanings. Among these is his reintroduction of Eid-e-Miladunnabi as Eid-e-Azam, emphasizing the importance of the day as "The Greatest Joy." Under his leadership, the World Sunni Movement celebrates this day to reflect the profound joy and respect for the Rasul and his teachings.[13] [14] [15]

In addition, Imam Hayat has promoted Eid-e-Meraj-un-Nabi, commemorating the miraculous ascension of the Prophet Muhammad to heaven, which his movement celebrates on the 26th of Rajab each year.[16] [17] [18]

He also initiated the observance of National Martyr Day on the 10th of Muharram to honor the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali at the Battle of Karbala, a pivotal event in Islamic history symbolizing resistance against tyranny.[19] [20] [21] Another significant observance promoted by his movement is Dark Day on September 23, which marks the establishment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932 and the destruction of many Islamic heritage sites by the Saudi regime.[22] [23]

Political Involvement

[edit]

Allama Imam Hayat is not only an influential religious leader but also an active political figure in Bangladesh. As the chairman of Humanity Revolution Bangladesh, he has been deeply involved in several political movements and protests advocating for social reform and justice.[24]

General Election 2024

[edit]

In the most recent 2024 Bangladeshi general election under Sheikh Hasina government, Allama Imam Hayat chose not to participate in the poll. During discussions with the Election Commission, Imam Hayat's Humanity Revolution Bangladesh set conditions for participating in the election, including the dissolution of the current parliament and the deployment of the army.[25] Since their demands were not met, Imam Hayat's Humanity Revolution Bangladesh boycotted the 2024 Bangladeshi general election.[26] They filed a writ petition in the High Court, calling for the dissolution of parliament and the rescheduling of the election under direct military supervision. The petition also requested the deployment of the army with magistracy powers to maintain law and order during the restructured election..[27] However, the High Court dismissed the writ as it was not presented. Later, Imam Hayat filed another writ seeking elections under the supervision of the army after dissolving the parliament.[28] The writ was again dismissed, after which Imam Hayat appealed to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.[29][30][31][32]

Support for the Quota Reform Movement

[edit]

Imam Hayat supported the 2024 Bangladesh quota reform movement in Bangladesh, which aimed to revise the country's public sector recruitment system. Under his leadership, Humanity Revolution Bangladesh organized protests across the country and internationally to demand reforms in the quota system, which had long been a point of contention in Bangladesh’s education and employment sectors.[33][34]

Opposition to the Interim Government

[edit]

Imam Hayat was one of the first prominent leaders to publicly oppose Bangladesh’s interim government, which was established during a political crisis. In a bold move, he led a large march towards Jamuna House, the official residence of the Chief Adviser of the interim government, demanding the resignation of the Chief Adviser.[35][36][37]

Social Activism and Global Protests

[edit]

Allama Imam Hayat’s activism extends beyond Bangladesh. His organization, the World Sunni Movement, has taken strong stances on international issues, including condemning terrorist attacks and global extremism.[38] The movement has protested against major terrorist incidents such as the 2017 London Bridge attack, the November 2015 Paris attacks, and the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter bombings. Imam Hayat has consistently called for peace and the upholding of humanity’s core values as dictated by Islamic principles.[39]
