production of biopharmaceutical products. The company's patented technologies facilitate the development and delivery of custom products, including reagents and materials for bioprocessing, biomanufacturing, and molecular diagnostics. These products include cell culture media, protein and nucleic acid purification kits, and reagents used in gene therapy, mRNA therapy, genomics, and synthetic biology.[1]

History

[edit]

Alpha Teknova was founded in 1996 by Ted Davis, a former scientist at Genentech, in Half Moon Bay, California[2]. Before establishing the company, Davis served as the Director of Consumables at Genomyx Inc., a company founded within Genentech. Until May 2020, he held the positions of President, CEO, and Chief Scientific Officer at Alpha Teknova. Ted Davis currently serves on the company's Board of Directors.[3][4]

In 2017, the company began the process of certifying its quality management system for medical devices to comply with ISO 13485:2016 standards. The certification was obtained on April 8, 2023, and is valid until July 25, 2026.[5]

Alpha Teknova went public with an initial public offering (IPO) on June 25, 2021.[6] On December 15 of the same year, it was added to the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index.[7]

In August 2023, the company opened a new modular Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)-certified manufacturing facility in Hollister, California. This expansion increased the site to more than 200,000 square feet, enhancing its production capacity and adding modern capabilities.[8]
