CJ Express

[edit]

CJ Express Group Co., Ltd. is a convenience store chain based in Thailand. Established in 2005 under the company PSD Rukthai Co., Ltd., it initially operated as a wholesale store in Ratchaburi before evolving into a hybrid convenience store and supermarket, focusing on providing consumer goods at comfortable and reasonable prices. In 2013, Carabao Group's founder, Sathien Setthasit, acquired a majority stake, leading to the rebranding of the company as CJ Express Group Co., Ltd.[1][2]

The brand operates over 1,000 stores under CJ Express and CJ Supermarket across 44 provinces in Thailand, primarily in suburban and rural areas. With a focus on serving local communities, CJ Express has implemented a unique business model that integrates various shopping zones within each store, offering an array of products from household necessities to beauty and lifestyle goods. The company also launched CJ MORE, a flagship store aimed at providing an enhanced shopping experience, following the philosophy of “More Than Supermarket.” CJ MORE emphasizes the brand’s commitment to offering a broader selection, more affordable pricing, and greater value to its customers.[2][3][4]

As the brand grows, it also strives to make the world a better place. CJ Express aspires to become more well-known and active by committing to ecological sustainability and taking part in social and educational growth.

History

[edit]

In 2005, CJ Express was founded by Wit Sasiluksananon under the company PSD Rukthai Co., Ltd. The first store, located in Ratchaburi, operated as a wholesale store spanning two units. Later, the store model shifted to a hybrid convenience store and supermarket format, focusing on selling consumer products at affordable prices. CJ Express distinguished itself by offering lower prices than typical convenience stores and frequently running promotions, attracting local customers. Furthermore, the stores featured smaller, lesser-known brands not available in other convenience stores, contributing to the company's positive reception and business expansion.[1][5]

In 2013, a major turning point occurred when Sathien Setthasit, co-founder and chairman of Carabao Group, along with partners, acquired over 80% of PSD Rukthai Co., Ltd., and the company was renamed CJ Express Group Co., Ltd. At the time, CJ Express operated about 200 stores.[1][3]

Although under the same ownership as Carabao Group, CJ Express operates independently. Recognizing the intense competition in the convenience store industry, Sathien Setthasit focused on creating differentiation. In addition to competitive pricing, CJ Express introduced a model featuring multiple service zones within the store, such as NINE Beauty for beauty products and Bao Café for coffee, increasing product and service variety for customers.[3][6]

CJ Express under the leadership of Sathien Setthasit implemented a "Small Town Strategy"[7] to enhance its presence by opening branches in provincial areas, the outskirts of Bangkok, and suburban regions. This strategy focused on entering smaller, less competitive markets while tailoring products and services to meet local needs, fostering community engagement, and building brand loyalty in underserved areas. By strategically avoiding direct competition with larger chains,CJ Express established a robust local presence. Following this initial success, the company further expanded into urban markets under the brand name "CJ Supermarket." [6][8]

In 2018, CJ Express reported 11.58 billion baht in revenue and 262 million baht in profit. The next year, revenue grew to 13.8 billion baht with a profit of 358 million baht. By the following year, revenue had increased to about 17 billion baht, with profits nearing 1 billion baht. As of 2020, CJ Express had expanded to 600 branches across 29 provinces, including key areas like Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Nakhon Pathom.[1][6][8][9]

In December 2020, CJ Express launched "CJ MORE," a flagship store located in the Silom district, spanning over 1,200 square meters. The store was designed to offer a unique retail experience, with various zones such as CJ Supermarket, NINE Beauty, Bao Café, and CJ MORE Food Hall, which featured well-known restaurants and pop-up stores.[3][6][9]

In order to promote future growth and manage growing competition in the retail sector, CJ Express expects to grow to at least 1,000 branches throughout 30 provinces and plans to list the company on the Stock Exchange of Thailand by the end of 2025.[1][6]

Associated Business Under CJ Express

[edit]

CJ Express Group offers a wide range of retail products and services through its multiple in-house brands, catering to various consumer needs. The company’s retail operations are anchored by CJ Supermarket, which focuses on consumer goods, providing competitive prices comparable to hypermarkets while maintaining convenience with locations closer to residential areas. As of 2024, CJ Supermarket operates more than 500 branches across Thailand.[1][3][4][5]

CJ Express Group has expanded its service offerings through the development of CJ MORE, a retail concept integrating five of the company's brands in one location. These brands include:

  1. CJ Supermarket: The company's original retail brand focuses on consumer products. Its strength lies in offering a full range of goods at competitive prices, comparable to hypermarkets, but with the convenience of locations closer to home. Initially expanding in Central Thailand, CJ Supermarket now has over 500 branches nationwide and continues to grow regionally.
  2. Nine Beauty: A multi-brand cosmetics and beauty zone with the concept "Beauty All in One." It targets customers who prioritize self-care, offering a variety of cosmetics, skincare products, and health supplements.
  3. Bao Café: A neighborhood coffee shop with the concept "Great Taste, Great Price." It offers Thai-style coffee at affordable prices for all ages, along with a variety of drinks and high-quality toast, aiming to provide excellent service.
  4. UNO is one of CJ Express Group's lifestyle brands, focusing on providing modern and innovative products that cater to everyday needs. The brand offers a range of fashion items, stationery, and electronic accessories, targeting teens and working professionals. With the concept of "Your Innovation," UNO emphasizes trendy designs and practical solutions for daily life.
  5. A-Home: As a subcategory of UNO, A-Home focuses on home improvement products. It offers a wide selection of DIY tools, gardening supplies, electrical and plumbing equipment, and small home appliances. Operating under the concept "Making Home Simple," A-Home offers items that facilitate easier access to and convenience from home projects for homeowners and DIY enthusiasts.
  6. Bao Wash: An automated laundry service providing self-service washing and drying machines.

CJ Express Group's diversified product and service portfolio aims to meet the needs of a broad customer base, from everyday groceries to lifestyle and convenience services.[2][8][10]

Environmental Commitment: CJ Express Group and Solar Energy Initiatives

[edit]

CJ Express Group has embarked on a significant environmental initiative by incorporating solar power into its operations. In partnership with PLANET Communication Asia and its subsidiary PlanetEV, CJ has taken steps toward integrating solar rooftop systems in its supermarket branches. As of 2024, the plan initially covers 50 stores, with a total installed electric capacity of approximately 1.5 MW. Currently, five branches, including Sai Mai 17, Bang Bon 4, Thian Thale 20, Lad Phrao 101, and Phetkasem 81, are already utilizing solar power.[11]

This initiative is a part of CJ Express and PLANET's 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The solar energy systems are designed, built, and managed by PLANET, which are sold to CJ with the electricity generated. This not only helps CJ reduce its environmental footprint but also supports the company's commitment to energy efficiency, cost savings, and responsible environmental practices.[11]

PLANET Communication Asia employs advanced solar technology to optimize energy production and distribution, significantly reducing energy loss. This allows CJ Express to take part in broader efforts to combat climate change by aligning its business operations with sustainability goals. CJ Express's efforts in this domain are part of a larger trend of integrating renewable energy across industries to contribute to the creation of a zero-carbon society.[11]

The partnership aligns with CJ Express Group's vision of nurturing the next generation of business leaders and contributing to their career development.[20]
