CareTech Holdings Company, known as CareTech Group or CareTech, is a private limited company..[1] founded in 1993 by brothers Farouq and Haroon Sheikh. The company operates 550 residential homes and specialist services across the UK[2]
CareTech supports adults with special and complex needs, and provides residential, specialist education and fostering services for children and young people. It operates supported living schemes, which includes individual flats, houses and grouped accommodation.
It supports people with learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorder, sensory impairment, Acquired Brain Injury, mental health problems, and unusual genetic disorders. The Children's Division is additionally focussed on physical disability, emotional and behavioural difficulties, sexual trauma and SEN needs. Adults can be supported in their own homes, the community, residential or nursing care and supported living.

Company structure
[edit]CareTech operates through 27 sub brands, the largest of which is Cambian. In 2024 it was the largest provider of children's social care in the UK by number of homes and places for children.[4] In 2015 CareTech acquired Spark of Genius[5], which provides residential care and education services in Scotland.
CareTech is divided into divisions:

Children's Services
[edit]Following the merger in 2018 of CareTech and Cambian,[6] CareTech became one of the UK's largest providers of children's services[4]. The merger was approved by the Competitions and Market Authority following a review[7]
It provides specialist services for children and young adults who have complex needs that include: Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH), autism and a learning disability.
Specialist education schools and colleges, residential services and foster agencies operate across England, Scotland and Wales. Residential services support children and young adults. Homes range from single occupancy to group living, with the provision of care, therapy and education. CareTech operates four fostering brands: By the Bridge, FSG, Park Foster Care and TLC Wales.
The division supports over 2,000 children and young adults across 47 services, and employs 5,500 staff.[8] The division uses a Mind Of My Own app to help young people communicate.
CareTech owns 'DHA', a national training provider, founded in 1994 to provide training, coaching and consulting, specialising in health and social care. It also provides apprenticeships.
Adults and Specialist Services
[edit]CareTech supports people whose Learning disability or Autism and associated complex physical and mental health problems can present with risk or behaviours which challenge.
Technology
[edit]In October 2020, CareTech bought Smartbox[9], which produces assistive technology for disabled people to communicate and be independent. Smartbox is a global provider of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) solutions. It has offices in Malvern, Bristol, Ireland, and the USA. Smartbox employs 500 staff and was founded in 2006 as a family company. The Smartbox company includes AAC providers REHAVISTA in Germany since its acquisition in 2021[10] and Talk to Me Technologies in the US. CareTech works with global partners to provide technology to AAC users in over 50 countries. Its AAC software called Grid is used by over 50,000 people globally.
Disability inclusion
[edit]CareTech supports public, private and third sector organisations by providing insight and recommendations on a companys' digital and physical accessibility, inclusive recruitment, policy and process and accessible communications. It helps companies to be more disability inclusive and advocates for change[11]. Services include: expert consultancy, training, digital/access auditing, Disability Confident Validation and Purple Approved Certification.
International
[edit]CareTech MENA invests in, partners with and operates services within the specialist education, social care and healthcare sectors in the Middle East, North Africa region. CareTech works with governments, service providers, not for profit organisations and other stakeholders across MENA to improve awareness, quality and access for People of Determination (or People of Disability) to services. Services are tailored to the needs of service users within the cultural settings of the country.
CareTech MENA has offices in the Dubai International Financial Centre Home in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Its two businesses: The American Centre for Psychiatry and Neurology and AS/Macani Medical Centre Macani Medical Center[12] provide consultations to children and adults across the Emirates and employ over 100 clinical staff.
Charity
[edit]Established in 2017, the CareTech Charitable Foundation is an independent grant-making corporate foundation registered with the Charity Commission.[13] Funded and founded by CareTech Holdings Ltd, the Foundation has an independent Board of Trustees. CareTech Holdings Ltd donates 2.5% of its pre-tax profits to the Foundation each year. The CareTech Foundation supported almost 500,000 beneficiaries in the first three years of its operations.[14]
The Foundation was set up to support and champion the social care sector, care workers and those living in care. It focuses on:
- Physical and learning disabilities and mental health
- Skills development for the care sector
- Supporting communities, including the family and friends of CareTech employees.
It delivers the above through Partnership Grants, Match-Fund Grants, Community Grants and a Staff Hardship Fund.
