Carl Frederick Weggel is an American magnet engineer known for his work in the development of ultra-high-strength laminated electric conductors and magnetic field calculations.[1] With a career spanning over five decades, he has contributed to various fusion energy programs and advanced magnet systems. Weggel has worked for institutions such as MIT, Inesco Inc, GE Healthcare, SAIC, and Commonwealth Fusion Systems. He is a Co-Founder of Kronos Fusion Energy, and currently serves as the Chief Scientist.[2]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Carl Frederick Weggel was born on March, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio. His interest in science began at an early age, leading him to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Physics at Harvard University, where he graduated in 1964. He later studied mechanical engineering at Tufts University from 1966 to 1970, specializing in high-field magnet design.
Career and Contributions
[edit]Weggel's career has been centered around the design of magnets and magnetic systems, particularly for fusion energy projects.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
[edit]- Designer, Ultra-High-Field Solenoids (1962–1966): Weggel designed ultra-high-field solenoids at the MIT National Magnet Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
- Chief Magnet Designer, ALCATOR Fusion Energy Research Program (1970–1973, 1975–1980): He led the design of superconducting solenoids at the MIT Plasma Fusion Center.
Magnion, Inc.
[edit]- Designer, Superconducting Solenoids (1966–1970): Weggel designed superconducting solenoids for Magnion, Inc. in Burlington, Massachusetts.
Magnetic Engineering Associates
[edit]- Magnet Designer, Magnetohydrodynamic Systems (1973–1975): Weggel worked on designing magnetohydrodynamic systems.
Inesco Inc.
[edit]- Magnet Expert, RIGGATRON Fusion-Energy Program (1981–1984): He contributed to the RIGGATRON fusion-energy program in La Jolla, California.
Kronos Fusion Energy Inc.
[edit]Currently, Carl Weggel serves is the primary architect of the S.M.A.R.T. (Superconducting Minimum-Aspect-Ratio Torus) clean fusion energy generator being developed at at Kronos Fusion Energy.[3][4] As a Co-founding partner and Chief Scientist,[5] he is helping in the utilization of aneutronic fuels, such as D-He3, to achieve sustainable energy.[6]
Publications and Research
[edit]Carl Weggel's research and publications have been influential in the fields of magnetic systems and fusion energy. Some of his notable works include:
