Dwight Carlton Harris (1884–1969) was a theatrical manager who survived the sinking of the RMS Lusitania because he had bought his own life vest at Wanamaker's.
Born in 1884 to a prominent New York family, Dwight's father was a cousin of George Jay Gould while his mother was Ada L. Fanning before her marriage.[1] Travelling to Liverpool to visit his fiancee, Aileen Canvendish Foster, prior to taking the Lusitania, he purchased a life vest from Wanamaker's. However, when the Lusitania sank, he put it on, rescued a young boy who was separated from his parents, and able to save himself.[2] . After the sinking, on July 2, 1915, Harris married his fiance at the Holy Trinity Church in Bracknell, England.[1] He then filed a claim of $4000 due to some of his property being lost in the Lusitania, later receiving it in March 4, 1924.[3] He died on December 7, 1969.[1]
