Fang Shujian (born August 5, 1998) is a Chinese musical theater actor and pop singer from Yiwu, Zhejiang Province. He completed his undergraduate studies in musical theater at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2021 and is currently pursuing a master's degree at the same institution.

Fang gained recognition in 2018 when he participated as a baritone vocalist on the Hunan TV show Super-Vocal (《声入人心》), where he performed iconic songs such as "Dancing through Life", "That Man" (《那个男人》), and "Melodramma". In addition to his television appearances, he has starred in several notable musicals and operas, including The Letter (《信》), My Bucket List (《我的遗愿清单》), The Orphan of Zhao (《赵氏孤儿》), and Spring in Shanghai 1949 (《春上海1949》). His operatic work includes performances in Farewell to Cambridge (《再别康桥》) and Tang Xianzu (《汤显祖》)

Fang Shujian began studying vocal music from a young age. In 2007, he became a student of Li Gaifang, and in 2014, he began training under Jin Yao. During his teenage years, Fang frequently participated in music television programs, including Music Express (《音乐快递》) on China Central Television (CCTV). He also achieved excellent results in both national and international vocal competitions, showcasing his early promise as a talented singer

Fang Shujian's teacher, Jin Yao, believed that Fang's appearance, temperament, and talents made him particularly well-suited for musical theater. In late 2015, Jin Yao took Fang to Shanghai to watch the original musical Sounds of the Sea (《海上·音》) performed by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. This experience sparked Fang’s passion for musical theater. In 2016, Fang successfully enrolled in the Shanghai Conservatory of Music’s Musical Theater Department, where he studied under the renowned vocalist and vocal educator, Professor Fang Qiong​

Musical contests

In 2010, Fang Shujian participated in the recording of China Central Television’s show Music Express (《音乐快递》), where he performed songs such as "Little Boy" (《小男孩》), "Youthful Dreams" (《少年梦想》), "Colorful Century Wind" (《多彩的世纪风》), and "Forward, Ujumqin" (《前进乌骏姆》). His outstanding performances earned him the title of "Challenge Champion" on the show​

In 2010, Fang Shujian won the Special Grand Prize at the National Finals of the 9th China Children’s Karaoke Song Competition. This prestigious recognition further highlighted his early talent and achievements in vocal performance​

In 2016, Fang Shujian participated in the China International Vocal Competition, where he won the Gold Medal in the Folk Singing Solo category for regular high school students and the Silver Medal in the Musical Theater Solo category for the same group

From 2016 to 2018, Fang Shujian performed in the original musical Sounds of the Sea (《海上·音》), produced by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He began his journey as a chorus dancer during his freshman year and gradually grew into more prominent roles, eventually playing the character Hu San in his sophomore year. In addition to this musical, Fang also appeared in two original operas by the conservatory: Farewell to Cambridge (《再别康桥》) and Tang Xianzu (《汤显祖》), further developing his skills in both musical and operatic performance

In December 2017, Fang Shujian performed in the musical The Fading Youth (《繁花尽落的青春》), which was a collaborative production between Cadillac Shanghai Concert Hall and the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center. This role further showcased his growing presence in the musical theater scene

In April 2019, Fang Shujian starred as the male lead, Naoki Takejima, in the Chinese adaptation of the musical The Letter (《信》) by Keigo Higashino. The musical toured several cities, including Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Chengdu. From May of the same year, he also performed in the Chinese adaptation of My Bucket List 4.0 (《我的遗愿清单4.0》), where he portrayed the character Liu Bao. This production toured cities such as Shanghai, Changsha, Xi'an, Qingdao, Ningbo, Xiamen, Fuzhou, and Suzhou.

In July 2019, Fang was set to appear in the musical Van Gogh, playing Theo, the brother of Vincent van Gogh. In October, he starred in the original musical Spring in Shanghai 1949 (《春上海1949》), a tribute by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China

In August 2020, Fang Shujian announced that he would be starring in the adapted musical The Orphan of Zhao (《赵氏孤儿》). He took on the role of Chengzi, a reimagined and more soulful character deviating from the traditional narrative of the story. The production embarked on a national tour starting in May 2021, bringing this classic tale with a fresh perspective to audiences across China​

In October 2021, Fang Shujian participated in the original musical Loyalty (《忠诚》) by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. This performance was part of his undergraduate graduation project, where he portrayed the character Xiang Xiaohui. The musical served as a significant milestone in his academic and artistic journey

In October 2018, Fang Shujian participated as a baritone in the recording of the show Super-Vocal (《声入人心》). In the first half of the competition, he performed on stage twice, delivering duets of "That Man" (《那个男人》) and "Melodramma". During the group stage in the second half, he joined Zhang Chao, Lars Huang (Huang Zihongfan), and Liang Pengjie to form the quartet "1975 Group," performing "The Coach of Kusk" (《库斯克邮车》) and "The Joy of Snowflakes" (《雪花的快乐》). In the 11th episode, during the producer collaboration stage, he performed "The Greatest Show" alongside Zheng Yunlong and producer Henry Lau (Liu Xianhua)​

On February 19, 2019, Fang Shujian participated in the recording of the 2019 Hunan TV Lantern Festival Gala (《2019湖南卫视元宵喜乐会》), where he performed "Ah, Farewell My Friend" (《啊,朋友再见》) alongside Jia Fan, Zhang Chao, and Shi Kai. On April 21, he recorded the fifth episode of Hunan TV's show The Night of Glory (《巅峰之夜》), which aired on May 17. Additionally, on May 1, Fang took part in the recording of The Magic Chinese Characters (《神奇的汉字》), where he performed an excerpt from the ancient song "Yangguan Sandie" (《阳关三叠》). This episode aired on July 4​

On December 25, 2020, Fang Shujian appeared on the Chinese cultural variety show Up! Chinese Youth (《上线吧!华彩少年》), produced by China Central Television (CCTV). This program focused on promoting traditional Chinese culture and creativity among young talents. Fang's impressive performances earned him the title of “Outstanding Youth Representative” by the end of the show​

On January 13, 2019, Fang Shujian participated in the Memory · Nostalgia (《记忆·乡愁》) 2019 Liao Changyong Guangzhou Concert. Continuing the "1975 Group" from Super-Vocal (《声入人心》), Fang performed as a guest alongside Zhang Chao, Lars Huang (Huang Zihongfan), and Liang Pengjie. Together, they delivered performances of "Hongyan" (《鸿雁》) and "The Joy of Snowflakes" (《雪花的快乐》)

On April 22, 2019, Fang Shujian appeared as a guest at Jian Hongyi's "Yi X Bu Ran" concert in Shanghai. During the concert, Fang performed the song "A Little Happiness" (《小幸运》), further showcasing his vocal talent​

On May 14, 2019, Fang Shujian participated in the Super-Vocal nationwide concert tour at its Chongqing stop. During the concert, he performed a solo of "Dancing Through Life". He also collaborated with Jia Fan and others for group performances of "The Joy of Snowflakes" (《雪花的快乐》) and "Clouds of My Hometown" (《故乡的云》)

On May 18, 2019, Fang Shujian participated in the Classic 947 Chenshan Grassland Radio Music Festival. At the "Musical Carnival" on the small stage, he performed well-known musical theater pieces such as "If Love", "On This Night of a Thousand Stars", and "Dancing Through Life". Additionally, he sang "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" in a duet with Xu Junshuo and Wang Jielu. This event aimed to promote musical theater to a wider audience and increase public engagement with the art form

On May 28, 2019, Fang Shujian performed at the Super-Vocal nationwide concert tour's Nanjing stop. During the concert, he delivered a solo performance of "Dancing Through Life". Additionally, he joined Zhang Chao, Lars Huang (Huang Zihongfan), and Liang Pengjie for group performances of "The Joy of Snowflakes" (《雪花的快乐》), "The Coach of Kusk" (《库斯克邮车》), and "The Greatest Show"

Starting in July 2020, Fang Shujian participated in the "Changxiangzhi - Fang Qiong Ancient Poetry Songs Concert" (《长相知-方琼古诗词歌曲音乐会》), a project supported by the 2019 National Arts Fund to promote traditional Chinese culture. During the performances, he delivered solo renditions of "Song of the Yue People" (《越人歌》) and "Green Jade Table: Lantern Festival" (《青玉案·元夕》), both based on classical Chinese poetry

On January 3, 2019, Fang Shujian appeared as a guest on Hunan Traffic Radio's show Energy Music (《能量音乐》). Alongside Lars Huang (Huang Zihongfan), he participated in a live radio interview where they discussed their experiences and shared insights into their musical careers​

On January 26, 2019, Fang Shujian participated in the "Sing for Spring: Flash Mob Series" featuring the song "My Motherland and I" (《我和我的祖国》). Along with athletes Long Qingquan, opera singer Liao Changyong, bass-baritone Wang Xi, and tenor Yu Di, Fang performed alongside nearly 10,000 residents at Orange Isle in Changsha. The event was a tribute to national pride, and it received widespread attention when CCTV News covered the event on February 10​

On May 25, 2019, Fang Shujian participated in Fudan University's 83rd public arts class titled "The Rise of Youth" (《风起少年时》) discussion and sharing session. During the event, Fang shared his professional insights and reflections on his experiences performing in the musicals The Letter (《信》) and My Bucket List (《我的遗愿清单》). He also explored various possibilities between art and life, offering a deeper understanding of his artistic journey and perspectives

On March 29, 2019, Fang Shujian appeared as a guest on Shanghai Radio's Dynamic 101 show Music Kaleidoscope (《音乐万花筒》). During the live broadcast, he performed several songs, including "First Love" (《初爱》)​

In May 2019, Fang Shujian participated in a flash mob event at the site of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party. Alongside Shanghai Conservatory of Music's president, Professor Liao Changyong, and Professor Huang Ying, as well as many other faculty and students from the conservatory, Fang performed the song "My Motherland and I" (《我和我的祖国》). Through this heartfelt performance, they led the citizens of Shanghai in expressing their sincere love for the country

On June 12, 2019, Fang Shujian participated in the closing ceremony and award presentation of the 12th Shanghai College Student TV Festival. He delivered a finale performance, singing "Starting Again" (《再一次出发》), marking the culmination of the event​

Charity Activities

On April 2, 2019, Fang Shujian participated in the "Dialogue with the Stars" public advocacy event for the 12th World Autism Awareness Day. Along with Ding Hui and Zhai Lishuotian, he performed the song "Love's Dedication" (《爱的奉献》). This performance was dedicated to offering heartfelt blessings to children with autism (often referred to as "children of the stars"). Through his participation, Fang used his influence to raise public awareness and encourage greater support and care for these children
