Bahlul Bahij (born 1962 in Panjshir – died 2021 in Panjshir) was a prominent military figure and the former governor of Panjshir Province. A member of the Tajik ethnic group, Bahij was deeply involved in Afghanistan's resistance movements and was a close associate of Ahmad Shah Massoud, one of the most revered leaders in Afghan history. Not only was Bahij a key military commander, but he also served as a trusted bodyguard to Ahmad Shah Massoud, ensuring his security during the intense battles against Soviet forces in the 1980s and later during the civil war and resistance against the Taliban.
Bahij played a vital role in the Panjshir Valley's defense, which became a stronghold of resistance under Massoud’s leadership. His proximity to Massoud as both a commander and personal bodyguard highlighted his importance in the inner circle of Afghanistan’s freedom fighters. Throughout his career, Bahij demonstrated exceptional loyalty and courage, contributing significantly to the defense of Panjshir, especially during the Soviet invasion and the subsequent conflicts.
Even after Ahmad Shah Massoud's assassination in 2001, Bahij continued to fight for the ideals of freedom and resistance. He remained active in the region's defense and became an important supporter of Ahmad Massoud, the son of Ahmad Shah Massoud, during the 2021 resurgence of Taliban forces.
On September 8, 2021 (17 Shahrivar 1400 in the Iranian calendar), Commander Bahlul Bahij was killed in the Ab Dara region of Panjshir in a fierce hand-to-hand battle with Taliban forces. His death marked the loss of a key figure in Afghanistan’s resistance movement. His legacy as both a close confidant and protector of Ahmad Shah Massoud, and as a commander fighting for Panjshir’s freedom, continues to be remembered in the region’s ongoing struggle against oppression.
