Early life
[edit]Irving F. Wiltse was born on March 15, 1900 in Preston, Nebraska. He attended Richardson County, Nebraska schools; graduating from Falls City High School. In 1921, he joined the Naval Reserves. From 1922-1924, he attended Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska; graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. He met his wife, Gladys Mae Buxton, at Nebraska Wesleyan. They were engaged on June 3, 1924. In the summer of 1924 and 1925, he worked as a fire lookout park ranger on Mt. Washburn in Yellowstone National Park.
Early career
[edit]After his graduation, Irving taught business courses at Plattsmouth High School in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. While living in Plattsmouth, he found a passion for the Boy Scouts of America and began his Boy Scout career as a Scout Master. He was selected to train in New York City to further advance his career with the Boy Scouts of America.
In 1926, he was sent to the Philippine Islands to bring Scouting to the region. He helped organize the Philippine Islands Council, which was later disbanded upon the inauguration of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines. He and Gladys were married in Manila in 1927. They returned to Nebraska, where Irving worked for the Omaha Boy Scout Council. In 1930, the Boy Scouts moved him to Puerto Rico, where he lived in San Juan. It is here where his two children were born. After the attacks on Pearl Harbor, he was called to Active Duty Naval service and stayed stationed in Puerto Rico after moving his family back to Falls City, Nebraska. He joined his family in Falls City in 1945, after the end of World War II. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserve until 1957.
