Kotra Pharma (M) Sdn Bhd, or simply called Kotra Pharma, is a Malaysian pharmaceutical company based in Cheng Industrial Estate, Melaka. It was founded by Piong Nam Kim @ Piong Pak Kim in 1982 in Melaka and is currently under the control by one of his sons, Jimmy Piong Teck Onn, as its managing director.[1][2] Kotra Pharma is currently one of the major domestic pharmaceutical companies in Malaysia, focus mainly on generic drugs, particularly antibiotics, painkillers, health supplements and injectables.[3][4]

Brands and Products

Kotra Pharma in 1989 launched its first own brand, Appeton, which mainly consist of various type of health supplements and nutraceutical products, and it has since become one of the household names for health supplement in Malaysia.[2][5]

Other brand names developed by Kotra Pharma since its founding include Axcel, various types of oral or topical prescription medicine; Vaxcel, sterile injectable pharmaceutical products; Arite, inhaler for asthma; Creobic, over-the-counter cream for topical fungal infection; and AxPain, an over-the-counter medicine for fever and pain relief.[6][7]

Locations and Facilities

The company currently has its headquarters and manufacturing plants located in Cheng, Melaka, while its sales and marketing office is located in Kuala Lumpur.[8]

Its industrial complex in Melaka consists of three separate blocks: Block A, Block B, and Block C.

Block A mainly functions as the warehouse and administrative office of the company. It was once the main manufacturing plant of Kotra Pharma before Block B was contructed and became operational in 2013.[9] Block B, also called Kotra Pharma Technology Centre, is the current main manufacturing plant and laboratories of Kotra Pharma.[9] Block C is still under construction as of August 2024 and is expected to be operational in 2025 as another manufacturing plant of Kotra Pharma.

Kotra Pharma is also a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kotra Industries Berhad, and the Piong family controls around 51% to 60% stakes of the parent company.[2][7] As of March 2018, about 60% of local revenue generated by Kotra’s pharmaceuticals division is derived from hospitals while the remaining 40% is from general practitioners.[7] Kotra Pharma claims its products has a presence in over 30 countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Myanmar, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Nigeria, and Greece, with ASEAN as the major export market.[7][10][11] Kotra Pharma is also one of the members of Malaysian Organisation of Pharmaceutical Industries (MOPI).[12]
