Lucía Carvajal Berland (*1943, -2023 Las Condes, Chile), is a renowned Chilean film critic and educator. She has held various academic and administrative roles in global education, working with private and government sectors.[1]

Awards

Lucía has been awarded the Lumière Prize, a recognition from the French Film Industry, for her work as a film critic in Chile, in addition to receiving regional awards in Chile.[2][3]

Career

Lucía has been an active member of several local and international organizations in the film industry and global education, actively participating in cultural events organized by cultural and academic communities including the collective "Sur Mujer" dealing with the arts and women's inclusion in the industry.[4] She has delivered lectures and workshops with attractive themes linked to regional cinema, while actively participating in film industry meetings, such as the Valdivia International Film Festival. One of her most impactful international projects has been the invitation of her long-term friend and high school classmate Dr. Paz Buttedahl, when Lucía become the Regional Director of VIA Vancouver Institute for the Americas, a global organization based in Canada under the umbrella of the University of British Columbia, through her work in cooperation with the VIA educational program led by Vito de Candia-Levieux[5] participated in and implemented international cooperation and sustainable development projects between universities and educational centers from Chile with Canada working with various educational organizations in the Southern Cone region assisting initiatives funded by UNESCO, the IDRC Canadian International Development Research Center, and the ACDI-CIDA Canadian International Development Agency.[6] Lucía has participated in the Educational Reform project in Chile, promoted by the renowned Chilean politician Michelle Bachelet, consequently, Lucía has been invited to partner with multinational teams due to her extensive work, she was part of several juries in different film festivals, in Chile and abroad. Together with Musia Rosa wrote a book based on reviews by Mariano Silva on basic knowledge of cinematographic language creating a film rating for the Chilean Cinema. As an interviewer, she participated in several meetings with Chilefilms, interviewing renowned Chilean women such as the actress Paulina García, and the writer Isabel Allende.[7]

Personal Life

From an early age, Lucía has been interested in cinema, so after finishing high school she entered the Film Studies program at the Film Institute of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, additionally attending numerous seminars and conferences related to cinematography, which has earned her invitations to several film festivals in Chile and abroad. Since her university years, she has actively participated as a critic, writer, and panelist in the Chilean Circle of Film Arts Critics, founded in 1955, sharing debates with important specialists from different media. Since her studies she has delved into research, cementing a vast career as a film art critic, recognizing the most outstanding values ​​​​in the disciplines and artistic traditions in the Chilean cultural sphere.[8]
Lucía was married to Guillermo Birkner Celis, an engineer at the Chilean Mint. They met at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile during their university years. They have had three children, María José, Bernardita, and Pablo Andrés.
She passed away of natural causes, on Tuesday 28th November 2023, a funerary Mass was held at the San Pedro de Las Condes Parish, located on Isabel La Católica Street intersection Santa Adriana.[9]
