Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital, commonly known as MB Hospital, is a premier state-owned hospital situated in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. Managed and funded by the Government of Rajasthan, the hospital was founded in 1887 and is one of the oldest healthcare institutions in the state.[1]

Establishment and Early Years

[edit]

MB Hospital was established in 1887 during the reign of Maharana Fateh Singh of Mewar. Named after his successor Maharana Bhupal Singh, the hospital was initially started as a modest healthcare facility to serve the local population. The hospital was constructed with contributions from the royal family of Mewar and philanthropists, aiming to provide accessible medical care to the people of Udaipur and surrounding regions.[2]

Over the decades, MB Hospital grew in size and reputation. By the early 20th century, it had expanded its facilities to include various specialized departments, catering to the diverse healthcare needs of the population. The hospital was closely associated with the royal family, and Maharana Bhupal Singh took a keen interest in its development, ensuring that it was equipped with modern medical amenities.

Modernization and Expansion

[edit]

Post-Independence, MB Hospital underwent significant modernization, with the addition of several departments and infrastructure upgrades. In 1961, the hospital became affiliated with Rabindra Nath Tagore Medical College, Udaipur, enhancing its capacity to offer advanced medical education and training.

In the 1980s, the hospital expanded further with the construction of new buildings, including a dedicated maternity and child care wing, an oncology department, and an upgraded emergency department. The hospital’s bed capacity increased to over 1,000, making it one of the largest government hospitals in Rajasthan.

Recent Developments

[edit]

In recent years, MB Hospital has continued to grow, incorporating the latest medical technologies and expanding its range of services. The hospital has also become a center of excellence for medical research and training, attracting students and professionals from across the country.

In 2011, a super-specialty block was added, providing cutting-edge treatment in areas such as cardiology, neurology, and nephrology. The hospital also plays a crucial role in public health initiatives, including immunization drives, health camps, and awareness programs.[3]

Current Status

[edit]

Today, Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital is a tertiary care center that serves not only Udaipur but also patients from neighboring districts and states. The hospital provides free and subsidized treatment to thousands of patients daily and is a lifeline for the underserved population in the region.

With a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and support staff, MB Hospital continues its legacy of providing high-quality healthcare, upholding its mission to serve the people of Rajasthan with compassion and excellence.[4]

Medical Education and Research

[edit]

MB Hospital, in collaboration with Rabindra Nath Tagore Medical College, offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and diploma programs in various medical fields. The hospital is also involved in cutting-edge research, particularly in the areas of public health, infectious diseases, and rural healthcare.
