Marge Carson is a renowned luxury furniture brand recognized worldwide for its exceptional craftsmanship, timeless designs, and enduring appeal.[1] Since its inception, the company has built a prestigious reputation as a leading name in upscale home furnishings, specializing in customizable, handcrafted pieces that cater to the refined tastes of luxury clientele across the globe.[2][3][4]

History

[edit]

Marge Carson was founded in 1947 by Marjorie Reese Carson, a designer known for her focus on high-end, customizable furniture that combined European design elements with American craftsmanship. Based in California, Marge Carson gained recognition in the post-World War II era, a period when Americans sought more personalized and lavish home furnishings. The company initially operated as a family-run business and built a reputation for attention to detail, the use of premium materials, and its custom design capabilities.[5]

From its early years, Marge Carson distinguished itself by offering bespoke furniture with intricate detailing and high-quality craftsmanship. The brand's design philosophy blended European influences with the relaxed, luxurious lifestyle associated with California, appealing to an upscale clientele of homeowners and interior designers.

Acquisition by Masco Corporation (1980s–1995)[6] In the late 1980s, Masco Corporation, a major player in the home improvement and building products industry, acquired Marge Carson. This acquisition provided Marge Carson with the financial backing to expand its operations and enter new markets. While the company benefited from increased resources and broader distribution under Masco, there was a clear difference between Masco's mass-market approach and Marge Carson's niche luxury focus. Despite this, Marge Carson maintained its reputation for high-quality, customizable furniture during this period.

Jim LaBarge Ownership (1995–2022)[1][7][8] In 1995, Jim LaBarge, who was serving as the CEO of Marge Carson, led a management buyout from Masco Corporation. As the new owner, LaBarge focused on returning the company to its roots in craftsmanship and custom design. He emphasized the brand's dedication to producing hand-crafted, luxury furniture, strengthening its appeal in the high-end market.[9] Under LaBarge's leadership, Marge Carson expanded its presence in showrooms across the United States[10][11] and internationally, solidifying its status as one of the most respected luxury furniture brands in the world.[1]

However, in 2022, Jim LaBarge ceased operations of Marge Carson after more than two decades of ownership, marking the end of an era for the company.[12] The sudden closure left uncertainty regarding the future of the brand until its revival later that year.

Janet Linly's Ownership (2022–Present)[13][14][15] In 2022, Janet Linly, founder and CEO of Chicago-based interior design firm Linly Designs, acquired Marge Carson brand[16] after unexpected closure following 75 years in the furniture industry. With a background in luxury markets and interior design, Linly took on the challenge of reviving the historic brand and guiding it into a new era. One of Linly's first strategic moves was to acquire the company's manufacturing facility,[17] which had played a key role in producing Marge Carson's artisan-crafted furniture for decades. This acquisition allowed her to maintain the brand's tradition of high-quality craftsmanship while overseeing its operations closely.

Under Linly's leadership[18] , Marge Carson has been redefined as an increasingly exclusive luxury brand.[19][20] Limiting distribution to select showrooms and designers, Linly has focused on creating a highly curated experience for clients. Each piece is treated as a custom, handcrafted item, further reinforcing the brand's reputation for quality and exclusivity. Her leadership has strengthened Marge Carson's position in the luxury furniture market, preserving its legacy while adapting the brand to meet modern expectations and preferences.[21]
