Mr. Crocket is a 2024 American supernatural horror film directed by Brandon Espy in his feature directorial debut from a screenplay he co-wrote with Carl Reid. Based on Espy's 2022 short film of the same name, the film stars Elvis Nolasco as the title character, with Jerrika Hinton, Ayden Gavin, Kristolyn Lloyd, and Alex Akpobome in supporting roles. It follows a mother who embarks on a quest to rescue her son from a demonic children's television series host who is kidnapping children.

The film was first announced in July 2024 as a full-length version of Epsy's original short that he directed for Hulu's Bite Size Halloween series. Principal photography took place on August 2024 in New Jersey.

Mr. Crocket premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 26, 2024, and was released by WorthenBrooks as a Hulu original film in the United States and on Disney+ internationally on October 11. It received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics.

Plot

[edit]

Mr. Crocket is an enigmatic children's show host who appears whenever a child is neglected or harmed by their parent. He manifests from a VHS tape that miraculously appears in a colorful outdoor library. He kidnaps young Darren, while also murdering his abusive step-father. Darren's mother Rhonda is driven insane, becoming a homeless woman who attempts to warn others about Mr. Crocket. Sometime later, Summer is recovering from the death of her husband Jerrel while her son Major seems heavily disinterested and dismissive. When Summer becomes infuriated with Major's behavior, Rhonda appears in an attempt to "save" Major, but Summer stops her. Rhonda warns Summer about Mr. Crocket.

One morning, Summer finds the mini library with the Mr. Crocket's World VHS tape and plays it for Major who appears taken by it. While at first relieved by the pacification, she is quickly flustered by Major's obsession with it and tries to get him to stop watching it. When he refuses, Summer yells at him about wanting a break from him. Major is hurt by this and soon Mr. Crocket appears and whisks Major away, horrifying Summer. Summer proceeds to look into Mr. Crocket and discovers that his full name Emmanuel Crocket. He was once a children's show host, but died in a shootout after having kidnapped a child. Mr. Crocket appears, via a TV, to mock Summer's attempts to find him.

Summer meets up with Eddie Briggs, another man who was a victim of Mr. Crocket after his daughter was taken by him. The two realize that Rhonda might know about him and find her. She reveals that Mr. Crocket's powers are tied to airwaves and has managed to telekinetically tap into them to locate where he might be. They also see footage of his failures as a TV show host, before they find the house he is visiting next. The three arrive just as Crocket is taking a child to his world and he proceeds to attack them. Rhonda distracts Mr. Crocket long enough for Summer and Eddie to go through the portal to Mr. Crocket's world.

Contrasting with the vibrant appearance from the show, Mr. Crocket's World is a hellish landscape where the children he has kidnapped are all under his control. Mr. Crocket appears and reveals his story. His father abusive to him, until one day he had enough and killed him, making it look like an accident. Motivated to help kids, Mr. Crocket grew up to be a children's entertainer and managed to get a show made. During one of his tapings, he saw a boy named Anthony who was sad. Convinced he needed his help, Mr. Crocket whisked him away to his house, much to the boy's delight. However, the cops came to arrest Mr. Crocket. When Anthony came out of hiding, Mr. Crocket jumped in the way of an officer's gun and was killed. However, he had made a deal with the Devil, allowing him to come back with supernatural powers.

Eddie reveals that he is actually Anthony and had been using Summer to get back to Mr. Crocket, but Mr. Crocket rejects him and has him killed by one of his puppet friends. After toying with Summer, he allows Major to decide between him or his mother. Major seemingly chooses Mr. Crocket and is given a knife to stab his mother. However, it's revealed that Major took Mr. Crocket's magic marker and Summer uses it to slice Mr. Crocket in half. Summer makes an exit as she, Major, and the kids return to the real world, though Mr. Crocket vows revenge.

Rhonda, who miraculously recovered, is happily reunited with Darren who has since become friends with Major. Summer's relationship with her son as improved significantly as both of them resume normal happy lives. However, the guidance counselor from Major's school visits Summer and reveals that her son has become violent with the other students who are all afraid of him because of his "father". Major is seen drawing a picture of his family which includes Mr. Crocket who is labeled as "Dad", implying that his sinister influence is still present.

Initial

[edit]

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 67% of 15 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.2/10.[4]

Tyler Nichols of JoBlo.com noted that "Jerrika delivers a solid performance, but her character can be a bit frustrating. Her treatment of her child and actions that enable Crocket to take him make it difficult to find her sympathetic. However, I didn’t mind this aspect, as the film made it enjoyable to root for the villain." He also expressed disappointment that some of the creative elements weren't fully explored throughout the film's entire runtime.[5]
