Paolo Mangiola is an Italian-born dancer and choreographer known for his work with leading contemporary dance companies and his tenure as Artistic Director of ŻfinMalta, the National Dance Company of Malta.

Career as a Dancer

During his career as a professional dancer, Mangiola performed with renowned companies such as Aterballetto, Staatstheater Nürnberg, Wayne McGregor, and Cullberg Ballet. He interpreted works by choreographers including Mauro Bigonzetti, William Forsythe, Jacopo Godani, Wayne McGregor, Rui Horta, Stijn Celis, Jorma Elo, and Deborah Hay. In 2012, he participated in Wayne McGregor’s TED talk and choreographed Alpha Episodes for the Royal Ballet.[1]

Transition to Choreography

After concluding his performance career in 2013, Mangiola completed an MA in choreography at The Place, London. In October 2014, after creating his first full-length work We/Part for Balletto di Roma, which premiered at the Civitanova Danza Festival[2], he was appointed associate choreographer for the company. During this period, he created FEM [3] for the Belgrade Dance Festival.

Artistic Leadership at ŻfinMalta

In the summer of 2017, Mangiola was appointed Artistic Director of ŻfinMalta [4], the National Dance Company of Malta . During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in positioning the company within the international dance community. His leadership expanded the company’s performances both locally and internationally, significantly increasing contemporary dance’s visibility within Malta’s performing arts scene [5]. Mangiola created several works for the company [6] and curated works by renowned choreographers, including Tânia Carvalho, Emanuel Gat, Roy Assaf, Rosemary Lee, Sergiu Matis, Núria Guiu, and Francesca Pennini.

Under his direction, ŻfinMalta developed an inclusive education and outreach program aimed at engaging diverse audiences. He also established an international cast and expanded the company’s repertoire across a variety of performance spaces, including conventional theatres, contemporary art galleries, urban settings, and heritage sites. Mangiola’s choreographic work has been performed in cities such as London, Rome, Milan, Belgrade, Chicago, Malta, Poland, Norway, and Germany.

Teaching and Commercial Work

Mangiola has taught contemporary dance and choreography at institutions such as the Scuola del Balletto di Roma, the University of Malta, and the English National Ballet School in London. He has also worked on commercial projects, providing movement direction for films and advertisements, including the Apple TV series Foundation in 2022 and a Lexus campaign in 2017. Additionally, he choreographed the opening ceremonies of Valletta 2018 European Capital of Culture and the 2022 Special Olympics.

Awards and Recognition

In 2023, Mangiola was awarded the Premio per la Cultura Mediterranea [7] for his contribution to contemporary dance.
