Rajapur is a town in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is located on the banks of the Sarayu River and is notable as one of the claimed birthplaces of the Hindu poet-saint Tulsidas.

Geography

Rajapur is situated on the northern bank of the Sarayu River in Gonda district of eastern Uttar Pradesh. The town is approximately 35 kilometers from the district headquarters of Gonda.

History and cultural significance

Rajapur is one of several places that claim to be the birthplace of Tulsidas, the 16th century Hindu poet-saint and author of the epic Ramcharitmanas. According to local tradition, Tulsidas was born in Rajapur in 1497 CE. The town contains several sites associated with Tulsidas, including: Tulsi Ghat - A ghat on the Sarayu River where Tulsidas is said to have composed parts of his works Janaki Kund - A pond where Tulsidas is believed to have had a vision of Sita Hanuman temple - An ancient temple dedicated to Hanuman, who featured prominently in Tulsidas' writings While the claim of being Tulsidas' birthplace is disputed by other locations, Rajapur remains an important pilgrimage site for devotees of the poet-saint. The town sees an influx of visitors during Tulsidas Jayanti celebrations each year.
