History

[edit]

Sri Chamundeshwari Ammavaru is located 24 km east of Nellore, near Gangapatnam village. The temple, consecrated by the Shakteyas about 1100 years ago, has a rich history of rituals, including the Brahmetsavams. In 1515 AD, Chandragiri Raju Chennapparayudu renovated the temple, and on 08.04.2009, the deity was reinstated. The Mahakumbhabhishekam was conducted by Sri Sri Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamy on 28.05.2009.[2] As the fourth Peetha of the Ashtadasha Shakti Peethas, the temple is believed to cure mental disorders and fertility issues. Devotees often perform special vows and rituals, including taking baths and doing 108 rounds for 40 days to seek blessings for children.[3]

Every year, the temple celebrates a grand marriage ceremony for the goddess on the full moon of Eruvaka. During the Brahmotsavam, the community observes dietary restrictions in honor of Sri Amma, emphasizing cleanliness and devotion.[4]
