Droopnath Ramphul State College (DRSC) is an academy based in Calebasses, Pamplemouses, Mauritius admitting both boys and girls who performed well in the National Certificate of Education (NCE). Students are prepared for the School Certificate (SC) and the Higher School Certificate (HSC).[1] The school derives its name from an eminent Judge Droopnath Ramphul.[2][3]
Droopnath Ramphul State College was one of the leading national colleges for girls in Mauritius. This college is known for promoting its students in academics as well as other extra-curricular activities over the years.
History
[edit]This state college was built in 1975 . Under the rectorship of Mrs Arlette Bazire, the school began functioning in an old railway station near the Beau Plan roundabout. [2]
In 1980, it was named after Judge Droopnath Ramphul (born 20 February 1921). He is best remembered and honoured for his contributions to education.
In June 1995, students transferred to a new location in Souvenir, Calebasses. The school was then renamed to Queen Elizabeth College - North (QEC-North).
Following protest against the use of the name QEC-North by Queen Elizabeth College girls, the school went to its original name till 2003 when it became a Form VI College and was thereafter named Droopnath Ramphul State College.[3]
In 2005, DRSC has attained its first ever laureate for the HSC Examination done in 2004.[4]
In June 2006, the school became a national college, and after three years, a fresh intake of Form I students with four A+ was enrolled. Students mostly come from Port Louis, the North, and the East.
In 2008, DRSC had a population of roughly 795 students, 535 of whom were from DRSC and 260 from Pamplemousses State Secondary School, who were accommodated at DRSC because their school was under construction.
In 2012, DRSC started their tradition of attaining at least one Laureate every year.[5][6]
In February 2014, DRSC had attained its first Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) National Scholarship for the HSC Examination done in 2013 on the girls' side (alongside Collège Du Saint Esprit on the boys' side).[7]
In February 2019, DRSC had attained its first ever Laureate on the Technical side for the HSC Examination done in 2018. The rector, Mr Nowkeswar Persand himself said that he was not expecting a laureate on the Technical side, but rather on the Science and Economics side on his interview.
In June 2021, DRSC was transformed into an academy, meaning the school will now be a mixed school and will only serves Grade 10 to 13. In 21 June 2021, the first batch of around 180 students, around ninety boys and around ninety girls officially started their studies at DRSC. [8]
In February 2023, DRSC was the first school to have attained the Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ) National Scholarship for the HSC Examination done in 2022 on the girls' side (alongside Royal College Curepipe on the boys' side). [9] Following the scholarship, on 21st June 2023, the Prize Giving Ceremony was graced by the Honourable, Lady Sarojini Jugnauth.
Unique Design
[edit]DRSC is distinguished for its distinctive architectural architecture among Mauritius' state colleges. The Administrative Block is on three levels and is placed in a circular building resembling a control tower, providing staff with a panoramic view of the entire school.

[edit]Last Updated 2024
Ordinary Level (Grade 10 to 11)
[edit]At the Ordinary Level (School Certificate), students are expected to choose eight subjects at school.
Student may wish to do a ninth subject (which is not necessarily available at school). However, they will have to do it as a "private" subject, meaning they will need to pay the Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES) for that particular subject.
If the student is struggling with an optional subject OR Additional Mathematics, they may wish to "drop" that subject in Grade 11 and proceed to do only seven subjects. However, the school does not recommend to do so.

Clubs
[edit]Arts & Crafts Club
[edit]The club is an amalgamation of activities not only those concerning art. They tend to help for all school activities including sports day and music day and more.
"We believe that art gives us a chance to truly find ourselves according to our imagination and uniqueness. It allows students to connect with their creativity and through art, each of us is able to transform our thinking skills into incredible masterpieces."
One of the club's aims is to foster and develop an appreciation of art and the exploration of diverse aesthetics. Around April 2022, the club organised Thrift Shop Event where members collected old clothes and accessories from students of the school itself and converted the old attires and items into fashionable and voguish outfits. The activity not only encouraged the budding talent of students but the funds gathered was donated to a student in need.

Benevolent Club
[edit]The benevolent club of DRSC has helped the entire school community and throughout the year, various activities were carried out for noble causes.
Each year, the benevolent club organises activities to raise funds, in order to help those in need.
Chess Club
[edit]Chess Club was revived by Geet Dussoye and Geshna Dussoye, alongside with the Club Coordinator, Miss Predita Gunput, a Biology Educator.
On 30 May 2024, DRSC had their annual Fun & Food Day, and the chess club has hosted their first chess tournament where students and even teaching and non-teaching staffs could participate. The winner of that competition was Krivant Choytoo, student in Grade 12.
On 19 July 2024, the club hosted their second chess tournament (beginner-friendly version) of the year. On this tournament, only students could participate in it as it was done during a normal school day.
Code For DRSC
[edit]Code for DRSC was set up by Nikhil Purlackee and Divya Taukoordoss, alongside with Computer Science Educators, Miss Bhavna Burrun, Miss Koosladevi Dosieah, and Miss Pooja Soorjonowa on May 2024. This club is one of the few clubs that is supported by an external organisation, Code for Mauritius.
On 21 June 2024, DRSC had their annual Prize Giving Ceremony and the Code For DRSC executive members had coordinated the event to ensure its smooth running.
Code For DRSC has participated in the Young Makers Design Impact for Challenge organised by Code for Mauritius (also associated with them), Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre, US Embassy, and the American Makers Space and the team has won the "Best Concept Video" award. In addition, this is the first time Code For DRSC has participated in a competition, and it has already won a prize showing how strong the new club is. In addition, the representatives of the club was also interviewed by the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC). [20]
Around July to August 2024, members of the club have participated in the Webcup Junior 2024 organised by the Federation of Innovative & Numeric Activities in Mauritius (FINAM).[21] Code For DRSC was also one of the partners for that competition. Multiple teams were assigned a topic, had to work on a website for a fixed amount of time and then present to the Judges. The team Trochetia, who are members of Code For DRSC had won third place on that Competition. In addition, this is the second time Code For DRSC was involved and a team representing the club has won a prize. Code For DRSC has won two prizes from two competitions in a single year, which is impressive when compared to other clubs at the school.

Message from President of the Club
[edit]"Code For DRSC is like my own child to me. Even though I co-founded it with bestie, Divya in my last year of school (my busiest year), I tried every way to make it interesting for the members, by hosting workshops and attempting to collaborate with other Technology based clubs. Honestly, this project is one of the best things that has happened to me this year. Code For DRSC single-handedly improved me in every way. It taught me how to lead a team, communicate with a big audience, grab the attention of someone, and even learn how to have fun while working on something. My only wish is that this club should continue after my departure."
-Nikhil Purlackee, Co-Founder and President of the Club for the year 2024
Environment Club
[edit]The concept of ‘going green’ refers to the practice of environmentally friendly lifestyles which help preserve and sustain the environment.
In 2021, the club has organised the TiBazzar where staffs and students sold vegetables and plants at school. [22]
In 08 December 2023, DRSC has attained the Silver Award for the Eco School Programme awarded by the Vice President of the Republic.
"We aim for the green flag next year (that is 2024)…" -Miss Predita Gunput, Club Mentor for the year 2023
In 2024, the club has organised a competition namely, Upcyle Challenge: Transform Trash Into Treasure where individuals or groups of students has to make eye catching and innovative objects using items that we normally would not use. The aim of the competition is to contribute the Eco-School Programme and make DRSC an eco-friendly school. The winner of that competition was Aditi Boodhoo, a student in Grade 13.
Food Club
[edit]Integrity Club
[edit]The Integrity is the platform to take a stand and create a lasting impact in this world.
In this club, student will find a "safe haven" where their voice are heard, valued and amplified.
Message from President of the Club
[edit]"I have spent countless months into reviving the school’s Integrity Club- an idea much sought after by the Rector. I have single-handedly come up with the clubs aims and objectives as well as managed the election process. Since this was an endeavour I had undertaken in my senior year of secondary school, I’m hoping the committee is competent enough to keep the club active and ensure it becomes a thriving organization that will continue to flourish even after my departure."
-Urooj Sohawon, President of the Club for the year 2023
Update: This club is currently inactive. The committee was unfortunately not competent enough to keep the club active after the departure of the President and Club Coordinator. (2024)
Interact Club
[edit]Update: This club will have its induction ceremony soon. (2024)
Mathematics Club
[edit]The Maths Club was set up by Nikhil Purlackee and Divya Taukoordoss, alongside with Mathematics Educators, Miss Harshita Kisto-Sadasing, Mr Subiraj Nundlall, and Miss Sushillah Soondur on June 2024.
Meme Legacy of DRSC
[edit]The Meme Legacy of DRSC is a private club that only consists specific members.
It was founded by a group of boys on Grade 10 on June 2021 with the name, Meme Club. The main objective was to make memes related to school for free. At the time, it only consists of five specific members.
In 2021, the group has attempted to make a new club, known as Anime, Manga & Meme Club to be able to meet new people with similar interests. However, the rector has rejected the idea. The expected president of that potential club, Shayan Sarwar, a student in Grade 10 has been persisting in order to get it accepted. The club was therefore accepted, under the condition that it will be operated under the supervision of the Art Club, making it a club with limited options.
Unfortunately, a second lockdown in 2021 had caused school to do online classes, not allowing any clubs to do any activities. The group however did not give up, and the concept, Meme Legacy of DRSC was born, under the leadership of Grade 10 students, Nikhil Purlackee, Tejusvir Sadasing & Chirag Bheecarry. The club has made multiple high quality meme videos and images to give everyone, especially the new Grade 10 Students a good laugh while they were stuck at their house.
At the start of 2022, classes resume to normal and there were less students that were interested in memes, therefore leading the downfall of Meme Legacy of DRSC. Shayan Sarwar has once again attempted in making Anime, Manga & Meme Club a reality. Unfortunately, due to multiple restrictions (such as social distancing) at the time and lack of resources and communication, the club had to be abandoned.
On July 2022, a new club, Gentlemen's Club was established by Tejusvir Sadasing & Nikhil Purlackee with honourable members Chirag Bheecarry, Shayan Sarwar, Udhav Kaulesarsingh, Evan Amic, Sendhil Cadressen and Rimesh Beeharry. The club had performed for the music day's fashion show and had make a never seen before performance at DRSC.
At the start of 2023, Gentlemen's Club had phased out due to the leaders Tejusvir Sadasing, who was in Grade 11 distancing away, Nikhil Purlackee who had skipped a grade and was in Grade 12 resigning, both for personal reasons alongside members leaving. It was then renamed to Michael Jackson's Club under the leadership of by two Grade 11 students, Shayan Sarwar, Chirag Bheecarry and a new Grade 10 students, Krrishna Ramsurrun who was recommended by Nikhil Purlackee before his departure. The club has performed on multiple occasion, such as Science Exhibition, Sports Day, Music Day (including Fashion Show too), the Duke of Edinburgh's Adventurous Journey at Rodrigues, and the annual Christmas Party.
On 2024, the Michael Jackson's Club started to decline in terms of interest. Nikhil Purlackee who was Grade 13 had taken the leadership of the club once again, and had reverted it to its original name, Meme Legacy of DRSC, as he believed that the club should not be restricted to only one specific topic. The other two leaders were Shayan Sarwar who was in Grade 12 and Krrishna Ramsurrun who was in Grade 11. The club is also now under the supervision of the Code For DRSC club.
Music Club
[edit]Annual activities organised by the Club:
- Musical Ceremony for National Independence Day

Science, Health & Wellness Club
[edit]The DRSC Science Club is a very dynamic club where members are encouraged to ‘think outside the box’ and give free rein confidently to their creativity application of scientific principles.
Around March 2021, the Grade 13 Orchid students and the Physics Department have participated in the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council's Building of Simplified Antenna for Satellite Data Reception and have successfully developed an antenna to receive signals at DRSC. [23]

Message from Rector (2024)
[edit]Greetings and a warm welcome to all. As school is resuming and our work life at school is starting. I sincerely hope you are embracing it with renewed enthusiasm and vigour after the summer holidays.
DRSC is now 49 years old and has lived up to its reputation over the years. I wish to thank each and every staff member who had as his/her motto a committed work culture. To those joining the school this year, I wish you a warm welcome and trust you will soon integrate and adapt the DRSC community. Your collaboration is quintessential on this new journey of 2024 and beyond. Our school with its adolescent student population calls for attentive, caring and devoted educators and staff to lead us on the path of success and growth.
"Alone we can do little, together we can do so much" -Helen Keller
A lot has been said about the synergistic potential of unity, be it a group, a family or an organisation. Accordingly, when the school vision and mission is understood and becomes the aligned guiding principle of each and every one, there is no barrier to success.
I hereby wish that together we create a disciplined culture, a climate and ethic that are conductive for the sound development of young learners. It is the third intake for the school as an Academy with a co-educational student population. It is definitely a different set up, with multifarious challenges and the need for innovative strategies.
You are called upon to play various roles as grade master, club coordinator, committee member, guide, etc although the crux of all remains being an educator. It is a huge responsibility as we are empowered to shape and mould the future of our young learners and consequently that of the future society and nation. Let us do full justice to this task.
Let us together promote academic achievement and holistic prowess among our students. With a long and rewarding history of achievement and excellence in education behind us, our school community continues to move forward together with confidence, pride and enthusiasm.
Renewed commitment on your part coupled with enthusiasm and drive of being a good teacher and staff member will surely impact positively on the school and student community. Strive not to allow routine drudgery to get at you and your precious calling. The one to bring the greater positive impact on your job is YOU.
"When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us become better too." -Paulo Coelho
Wishing you all the best.
-Mrs Mantee Sookharee, Rector for the year 2024
