Steps to reproduce in Blender 2.8

  • In an empty scene, go to Object mode
  • Add > Mesh > Grid: 2160, 1080, 108
  • Modifier Properties (spanner icon tab on right pane)
    • Add Modifier > Displace
  • Texture > New > Show texture in texture tab. (2-capsules icon button)
    • Image > Open > browse for Earth_dry_elevation.png
  • Modifier Properties (spanner icon tab on right pane)
    • Texture Coordinates: > UV
    • Midlevel: 0.553
    • Strength: 2
  • Go to Edit mode
  • In the top toolbar, Transform Pivot Point (2-linked-circles icon button) > 3D Cursor
  • Keypad 5 to select orthographic projection and keypad 3 to select Right view
  • R (rotate) X -90
  • G (move) Y 63.78
  • Mesh > Transform > Warp: 200, 90, -60, 60
  • R (rotate) Y 90
  • Mesh > Transform > Warp: 400, 90, -60, 60
  • R (rotate) Y 90
  • Go to Object mode
  • Object Properties (framed-square icon tab on right pane)
    • Rotation Z: 30
    • Scale Z: 0.99665
  • File > Export > Stl
  • In a new empty scene, File > Import > Stl
  • Go to Edit mode
  • Select north pole vertices
    • Vertex > Merge Vertices > At Center
    • G (move) Z -0.46
  • Select south pole vertices
    • Vertex > Merge Vertices > At Center
    • G (move) Z -0.45
  • Select all
  • Mesh > Clean Up > Decimate Geometry > Ratio: 0.1
  • File > Export > Stl
