Sherwood Park Freeway

[edit]

@Hwy43: How would you feel about a new string "Shwd. Pk. Fwy" (has to be that short to fit) so that it can be used instead of the almost entirely unknown "Hwy 100" in the previous route field at the bottom of the Stoney Trail infobox per WP:UCRN? I already modded this template to include it for test fitting and it's not ideal, but better than Hwy 100 which I prefer not to see anywhere aside from on the SPF article. -- Acefitt 22:20, 11 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the ping. I'm not familiar with modules. 117Avenue might be. AT's abbreviation for Sherwood Park Freeway, as evidenced by the progress charts and other AT publications, is S.P.F., though my personal preference is SPF as the periods are superfluous. @Hwy43 and Acefitt: I merged the new type back into the Hwy type table. I added "SPF" as the abbr for Hwy when the route passed is 100. -happy5214 06:48, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Happy5214: A few more characters are available which is why I was thinking Shwd Pk Fwy, but SPF works. The reason I did it like that was so that the Hwy 100 version of it could still be called without being subbed as SPF. I'm not at at familiar with how modules work, but that would be preferable. -- Acefitt 07:49, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If, as you say, the highway is never referred to as "Highway 100", I see no need to keep the default abbreviation. Feel free to change the abbreviation as Alberta road editors (I assume including yourself) see fit. I just put something in for now, so feel free to change it. -happy5214 08:36, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Happy5214: It's fine as is, thanks for doing it. The module syntax is a bit tricky. -- Acefitt 12:19, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't make it simple for everyone, unfortunately. A lot of this stuff is included in the module docs, including the "switch" table used here. -happy5214 20:33, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hwy vs. Highway

[edit]

@Imzadi1979 @Evelyn Harthbrooke I noticed that the template was updated along with Module:Road data/strings/CAN/BC and Module:Road data/strings/CAN/SK to go from the abbreviated "Hwy" to the full name "Highway"; matching Module:Road data/strings/CAN/ON. I'm curious as to the benefit of using "Highway" vs the abbreviation of "Hwy"? I recognize the official name is "Highway", but abbreviations are used on most other lists despite their official names being unabbreviated. Personally, I think the full name can clutter up the list and it links to the fully named article. Should this be opened to a larger discussion before implemented? I swapped to using "Highway" because it's the provincial norms of both BC and AB, and there's no reason to use abbreviations in tables, especially when it goes against official nomenclature of the respective provinces to do so. - Evelyn Harthbrooke (leave a message · contributions) 02:37, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
