Paradise Lost is the second studio album by Cypriot composer Inal Bilsel, released on 12 January 2018 by Epic Istanbul / Sony Music Turkey.[1][2] The album was noted for its exploration of dystopian worlds, complex soundscapes and thematic depth.[3][4] Bilsel collaborated with various musicians for the album and recorded live-string performances in Istanbul.[5] The album is notable for its use of transmedia narrative through its accompanying short film,[6] and various other forms of media that contribute to its storyworld which appear in Bilsel's live events and exhibitions.

Concept

[edit]

Paradise Lost is a concept album that has been interpreted in terms of its philosophical exploration of the concept of utopia and dystopia.[7] The album reflects on the human condition, focusing on the contrasts between the idealized and the harsh realities of modern existence. Another core theme of the album is viewing childhood and Cyprus as lost paradises.[8] Using music to probe existential themes of memory, longing, and the disillusionment that comes with the collapse of utopian dreams, the work reflects on the transient nature of happiness and the human tendency to seek perfection in a flawed world, offering a sonic landscape that mirrors this conflict.[9][10]
