Comments

[edit]

All of this is completely biased. The portal tries to make the reader believe that the majority of Latin Americans living in the US prefer the term "Latino" which is not the case. Most of us detest that artificial label.

Says you, most of us prefer this label and detest the term "Hispanic" as Latino encompasses all Latin Americans and excludes the Europeans who raped the women of our land. —Preceding unsigned comment added by CartelCacique (talkcontribs) 06:44, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Portal:Latino and Hispanic AmericanPortal:Hispanic and Latino Americans

  • Only the portal and its Open Tasks subpages use the arrangement "Latino and Hispanic" at Wikipedia. The group's main article is titled Hispanic and Latino Americans, as the Census Bureau uses "Hispanic or Latino" officially ([1]). Also, "Hispanic and Latino" is far more common on websites and Google Books than is "Latino and Hispanic". I tried to move the portal myself, but it didn't seem to work the same way as normal article moves. SamEV (talk) 21:34, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Jafeluv. I had no idea that moving a portal involved moving so many other pages! SamEV (talk) 01:05, 24 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fix up

[edit]

very moribund portal. ive given it a slight facelift. i would like to list the mid to top importance, C class to FA class articles here, to use in the "topics" section and others.

All of these articles are about hispanic american topics (not just hispanic, as in nations, etc), and are well written (c, b, a, GA, FA class):

Images

[edit]

There is no category for featured pictures at the latin america project, so here are some images i have found in various ways:

Confusion

[edit]

I was reviewing the edit history of the portal. I see that the selected image, article, and lead article were originally all US centric, while the "topics" ranged over all of the americas. The portal name seems to indicate this was intended to be about the latino population of the united states, not of the Americas. I am not sure now what is to be done with this. the Wikiproject associated with this portal is moribund as well. I think i need to remove the latin american content here, as the portal for latin america should cover that. It was very confusing: we had the flag for ALL latin peoples in the lead article.

This portal is intended to cover the topic of latino/hispanic people of the United States. Articles only tangentially related to this, such as Latin Jazz, should NOT be shown here.

If anyone who cares has any other opinion about this, please comment here. Im sorry if i got confused, but it was because previous editors had made a mess of it. Its also confusing to hear hispanic and latino used for the US only. i thought the terms were used more broadly. my error.

Hola, Mercurywoodrose, you've made this look great! (BTW, do you have time to do the same sort of beautification project over at Portal:Montana where I've been working, perhaps? ... :)
I'd like to see this portal focus on the Latin American population in the US. We probably need to split into two portals, one for Latin Americans in the US, and one for Latin Americans in general. Something on the order of "Hispanic and Latino Americans in the United States" and "Latin Americans", with links between them. Djembayz (talk) 13:41, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think its necessary to focus on latin american in the us. if we expanded it to include all hispanic peoples, it would be too close to the latin american portal. I will not be adding any content thats about central/s american peoples. the article on afro latin american i let stay (i put it there), as it does have significant us content, but i would not object if it was removed. we just need to make a clear link to the latin american portal. I'll look at the montana portal: i know the SF bay area and hispanic american subjects reasonably well, but dont know big sky country at all.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 03:49, 5 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I will attempt to add new material every 4 months, so the next editing phase will be in early july, as my first wave of edits began early March.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 16:27, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I will now only consider adding a new DYK on a regular basis. random articles (below) can be added at any time.99.14.216.94 (talk) 07:07, 5 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

DYK

[edit]

I have stopped updating the DYK with new items, and will allow for the random rotation through what we have now (12 selections). thus, any new DYK's since october are not going to be here. however, this portal doesnt need anyone to keep it up to date now, so my doing less here shouldnt matter.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 02:20, 22 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
