The Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) is a local body government in Mizoram. Unlike other autonomous district councils in Mizoram, the council have a limited administrative autonomy.[1] It was created on July 9, 2018, as an administrative body for the minority Hmar people and encomprises Hmar-dominated regions in the Aizawl, Kolasib and Saitual districts.[2] The term Sinlung refers to the supposed ancestral origin of the Hmar people.[3] Its headquarters is in Aizawl.[4]
History
[edit]The Sinlung Hills Council was formed as a result of the peace accord signed between the mizoram state government and Hmar People's Convention (Democratic), after the signing which about 100 Hmar militants laid down their arms.[5]
Area
[edit]The council comprises of 31 villages in the Hmar-dominated northeastern part of Mizoram. It covers 3 assembly constituencies in the districts of Aizawl, Kolasib and Saitual.[2]
Composition
[edit]The council has 14 members. 12 of whom are elected and 2 are nominated. The council is headed by a Chief Executive Member.[6]
Election
[edit]2019 SHC election
[edit]About 20,914 voters were eligible to vote for the election. It was the first election since its election.[7] The MNF-HPC alliance won 10 seats, and Independents won 2 seats.[6]
2024 SHC election
[edit]About 23,789 voters were eligible to vote including 11,914 female voters.[6]
