Rated as stub for obvious reasons. Rated as high-importance due to death toll. It could perhaps even warrant a rating of top importance, but I won't rate it that important unilaterally. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 19:54, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Impact of typhoons on unprepared areas

[edit]

There are places where I realize are much more fortunate when it comes to typhoons. I know from experience that some places can hold up and these places some people are not worried. On the contrary because of storms, people are relieved that they don't have to go to work or school. This realization made me want to look up more about typhoons that have made a heavy impact in a place where there is little to no preparations. Of course, even well prepared cities shouldn't take storms too lightly. Added headings of Meteorological History and Aftermath. Added information into heading of Gulf of Tonkin and Haiphong and heading of Casualties. Removed one source because page could not be found when the link is clicked. --Mandychoi1013 (talk) 02:50, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Philippine death toll?

[edit]

I'm not convinced this typhoon was one of the deadliest on record. I don't believe the 20,000 deaths happened in the Philippines, and I worry now that because Wikipedia has had it listed as such for so long, there will be sites that have used Wikipedia's total. I think it's a misrepresentation from a USAID source which mentions the storm moving through the Philippines being the same as the one that caused 20,000 deaths in "Tonking", which was the old name for northern Vietnam. And as we know, that 20,000 estimated death toll in Vietnam was itself a misrepresentation of another source (17,000 too many). If the 20,000 deaths actually happened, I'm having a tough time finding sources backing it up. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:52, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd agree with removal. YE Pacific Hurricane 07:13, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I emailed PAGASA, hoping to get some clarification. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:40, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I Opened a topic on Storm2k, a weather forum, and got similar feedback regarding the Philippine deaths. In the absence of more reliable sources backing up the 20,000 deaths in the Philippines, I removed them. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:16, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
