Bongani Track Update?

[edit]

You should update it, and finish the track, it didn't die out as a tropical storm. Syntheticalconnections (talk) 22:00, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll get to it in a couple minutes. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 23:53, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Anja Cleo?

[edit]

Earlier you had Cleo at Cat 2 Intense Cyclone, but Anja as a Cat 3 Normal Cyclone... Syntheticalconnections (talk) 23:56, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're mixing two scales together. The name given to the storm (i.e. Intense Tropical Cyclone) is according to Meteo-France which reports their own wind speeds in 10-minute standards. This tends to differ from the JTWC intensity which we correspond to the SSHS. Although Anja was a Cat:3 at one point, Meteo-France assessed it to have been a high-end Tropical cyclone, with 10-min winds of 100mph. The threshold for an Intense Tropical Cyclone is 105mph to 130mph. When Cleo was upped to an Intense Tropical Cyclone, the wind speed reported by the JTWC was not as high as the conversion from 10-min to 1-min winds should be. Hence why it looked like the intensities did not add up correctly. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 00:07, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That makes no sense, shouldn;t there be a spesific point that says. Boom! "You're an ITC!"?Syntheticalconnections (talk) 00:48, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There is a point when it is declared a "ITC" - When RSMC La Reunion (Meteo France) say that 10-min winds=90kts.Jason Rees (talk) 01:57, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The JTWC does the 1-min winds of the SSHS. RSMC La Reunion uses the scale with the Intense tropical cyclone. They are completly unrelated! Hope this helps. --Priyanka 02:50, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Where do you find?

[edit]

Where do you find advisories on MRF's website? What links take you there when there is a cyclone? Syntheticalconnections (talk) 00:42, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

On Reunions website you goto Dernières informations cycloniques and that will bring up a page saying if theres any active storms and give the advisories.Jason Rees (talk) 02:36, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't there ones in english? You have links to english ones, but they are in random folders on the internet. Syntheticalconnections (talk) 13:59, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Annoyingly Reunion dont put the english verson on their website. We have to rely on the NOAA links or the FTP Files, all of which are above.Jason Rees (talk) 17:15, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Or here, zI found it by google searching "RSMC La REunion" it's the first one. Syntheticalconnections (talk) 04:08, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edzani Classification

[edit]

"Early January 7, RSMC La Reunion upgraded Edzani to a Tropical Cyclone skipping Severe Tropical Storm." Are you sure? I kida saw the advisroy that said Severe Tropical Storm Edzani was at 55 kt winds. If I am not mistaken, that is a Severe Tropical Storm. Syntheticalconnections (talk) 14:46, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the RSMC La Reunion best track for Edzani: [2]. Edzani was a Severe Tropical Storm (Forte Tempête Tropicale) at 0000 UTC January 7 and it was further upgraded to a tropical cyclone six hours later. -Ramisses (talk) 15:31, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

90s invest

[edit]

I have been watching the nrl page. This is the same system. They have had problems with lastedt images, so I imagine that they messed up and took it if for two days. Syntheticalconnections (talk) 14:04, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sub-tropical depression?

[edit]

How is it a depression? Don't La Reunion use disturbances instead? Syntheticalconnections (talk) 01:26, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think they use both, but why they used depression as opposed to disturbance i dont know. i didnt find anything from a look through the TCOP but looking through the advisories Reunion specifically state that it should be called a Subtropical storm.Jason Rees (talk) 01:35, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Now, I am wondering why they don't. Syntheticalconnections (talk) 02:32, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Why they dont....?Jason Rees (talk) 02:38, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Why they don't upgrade it to subtropical storm.Syntheticalconnections (talk) 02:54, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No one knows my guess would be that there was a disagreement between Mauritius and Reunion.Jason Rees (talk) 03:03, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There was a mention, in the advisory, that it should have been called subtropical storm but for some reason they kept it as a subtropical depression. - グリフオーザー (talk) 01:51, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I reckon that was due to a disagreement between Mauritius and Reunion as my look through the TCOP the other day showed that it should off been named by Mauritius.Jason Rees (talk) 02:13, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dépression subtropicale 16 has also been translated as Subtropical Depression on the English technical bulletin. Maybe the RSMC have recently started to discern a difference between Subtropical Disturbances and Depressions.--Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 09:48, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And why it was named Joel while still classified as a depression? This naming is at least as odd as the system itself is. Did you have a look in the latest advisory (some parts snipped)
PHENOMENON: SUBTROPICAL DEPRESSION 16 (JOEL) 996 HPA
POSITION: 25.5S / 43.6E
(TWENTY FIVE DECIMAL FIVE DEGREES SOUTH AND FORTY THREE DECIMAL SIX DEGREES EAST) AT 1200 UTC
(...)
STORM FORCE WINDS 50 KT AND VERY ROUGH SEAS NEAR THE CENTER.
Please correct me if I am messing up but according to their scale that would be an severe tropical storm if it was tropical. --Matthiasb (talk) 17:44, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It was named because it had surpassed winds of 35kts which is the general naming level for subtropical and tropical cyclones in this basin. The thing i find odd are the classifications with it being called a Depression as opposed to a subtropical storm as what happened with SS 10.Jason Rees (talk) 22:22, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think 10 was actually designated subtropical storm by RSMC. This is what was officially said (advisory 12):
GIVENT THIS HYBRID CHARACTERISTICS (BAROCLINIC UPPER LEVEL ENHENCEMENT + TROPICAL WARM CORE), SYSTEM IS MAINTAINED AS A SUBTROPICAL DEPRESSION BUT SHOULD BE CALLED A SUBTROPICAL STORM ....

--Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 08:58, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, that sentence reads like found in Wikipedia... :-) --Matthiasb (talk) 09:20, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Timeline

[edit]

The timeline for this season is now all up to date, and thus i have decided to introduce a Timeline of recent events section on the season page to help it stay up to date. Please feel free to help out with it or leave any comments here. Thanks Jason Rees (talk) 22:54, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edzani

[edit]

Cyclone Edzani was one of the most powerful cyclones in the South-West Indian Ocean basin ever, tied with Adeline-Juliet in 2004 and a few others (none and even the 2nd most intense don't have their own articles) for 3rd most intense cyclone in the South-West Indian Ocean, just behind Gafilo in 2003. So does that mean it merits its own article? 112.203.184.112 (talk)

I agree it should get an article.Jason Rees (talk) 18:00, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Someone should make one, what about you? Apparently you started a draft sometime ago but you didn't get too far, maybe you fix it and turn it into an article? I would really like to see

Very Intense Tropical Cyclone Edzani

Main Article: Cyclone Edzani (2010)

Oh and as a side note, can you make an article for Typhoon Gay (1992)? 112.203.184.112 (talk) 07:20, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It may take some time, but I'll see what I can do about getting an article for Typhoon Gay. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 10:37, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have an article for Edzani now, if you want to use it. I made it using my sandbox.

Joël

[edit]

For the record MFR spells Joel with two dots in the ATCR and thus I have changed the usage here to reflect that.Jason Rees (talk) 09:28, 11 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
