Copy-editing

[edit]

Per the request at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests#2019 Vietnamese census, I have completed a preliminary round of copy-editing, focused on grammar and format. I plan to do another round of editing tomorrow. Rublov (talk) 01:58, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ltn12345: I have fulfilled your request for copy-editing. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments about anything that I changed. In my second round of editing today I removed a fair amount of information; you can use this revision which is post-editing but pre-removal if you want to restore anything. I have a few comments that you may wish to consider if you intend to nominate this article as a good article:
  • Lead
    • Here and in the "Design and questions" section it says The census was conducted in all 63 of Vietnam's provinces and municipalities, along with three ministries, but I don't know what it means for a census to be conducted in a ministry. Should it be by three ministries? If so you probably don't need to mention it in the lead.
  • Background
    • There were lots of names of decrees and committees that made it hard to read, so I removed them and summarized.
    • This section barely mentions the Vietnam War although surely that had a large effect on population growth.
    • It says the government starting family planning in 1961; would that government be the government of South Vietnam or of North Vietnam?
  • Purpose
    • This section is quite vague and phrases like research, analysis and forecasting and implementation of the socio-economic development strategy sound very impressive but mean very little. I'd cut down on it or even remove the section entirely; most censuses have similar aims and this census appears to be no different.
  • Design and questions
    • I removed the list of main topics as it was too lengthy.
    • It says The census covered all Vietnamese people residing in the territory of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Is "Vietnamese" meant as an ethnic designation here (e.g., as opposed to Hmong people)? If not, then simply all people residing... would be more accurate.
@Rublov: Based on the quote in the corresponding article in Vietnamese, it's not an ethnic designation. It's meant to address all people holding Vietnamese citizenship.  Băng Tỏa  16:16, 1 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Preparation
    • Again, removed a lot of names of laws and committees.
  • Timeline
    • This section is called "Timeline", but it is mostly organized by location, not by time.
  • Ethnic demographics
    • This is a very long list. I think it should be cut off somewhere, maybe at groups with less than 100,000 people. Also, it is not sorted correctly.
  • Religious demographics
    • Similar comment: do you need to include groups with less than 1,000 adherents, especially those with long names with no links that is not likely to mean anything to the average English-speaking reader?
