Repetition and Commuting

[edit]

Repetition

[edit]

West Midlands conurbation refers to the conurbation that includes the cities of Birmingham and Wolverhampton as well as the large towns of Walsall, Dudley, West Bromwich and so on.

West Midlands (region) refers to the Region of England that includes the counties of Staffordshire, Shropshire, West Midlands, Worcestershire and so on.

These two do not refer to the same areas - despite their similarity of name, so using both is not repetition.

Commuting

[edit]

The current version of the page uses "M6 motorway Junction 13 is nearby making it convenient for commuters into the Birmingham, Telford and the wider West Midlands region."

However, looking at the latest Travel to Work Area information from the 2001 census, Acton Trussell is within the Stafford TTWA. A TTWA is defined as a collection of wards for which "of the resident economically active population, at least 75% actually work in the area, and also, that of everyone working in the area, at least 75% actually live in the area". It is near to both the Wolverhampton and the Walsall & Cannock TTWAs. It is fairly close to the Telford & Bridgnorth TTWA, although it is necessary to pass through the Wolverhampton TTWA in order to reach it. The Birmingham TTWA boundary is approximately 16 miles away from the village.

It can therefore be said that the majority of the village commutes within the Stafford TTWA, and it is extremely likely that there is significant levels of commuting to destinations within the Wolverhampton TTWA, the Walsall & Cannock TTWA and the Telford & Bridgnorth TTWA. It is far less likely that there are statistically significant numbers commuting to destinations within the Birmingham TTWA.

The sentence should therefore perhaps read something like: "The majority of commuting from the village takes place to the areas of southern Staffordshire, eastern Shropshire and the West Midlands conurbation"; whilst the nearby M6 motorway junction can be dealt with separately. In the light of your deliberations, I have amended the text to make it less specific and hopefully then upsetting nobody, thank you Peter morrell 07:53, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You have put: The majority of commuting from the village takes place to the areas of southern Staffordshire, eastern Shropshire and the West Midlands conurbation. Who says so? This is pure speculation unless a source given. Can we source that please or lose it? thanks Peter morrell 08:42, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have given the source already in this talk page - the Travel to Work Areas from the 2001 census. The Office for National Statistics says so. The pure speculation was the previous wording. Fingerpuppet (talk) 12:48, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
